SHARH OF THE 40 HADEETH HADEETH
NUMBER 13

HADITH NUMBER 13:
On the authority of Abu Hamzah Anas bin Malik (RA) the
servant of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: None of you [truly] believes until he loves
for his brother that which he loves for himself. [It was related by al-Bukhari
and Muslim]
When the Prophet (ﷺ) entered into Madina,
-he was served by Anas for ten years
-and not once did he raise his voice at him
Anas ibn Malik was from the tribe of Al-Khazraj.
-after the death of the Prophet (ﷺ),
-he participated in the battles to conquer nations
-he was one of the sahabah who lived the longest
-He died 93 years AH in Basra at the age of 103
SHARH OF HADITH:
This hadith is called the golden rule,
-you should treat people the way you would like to be treated yourself
-we should take their feelings into consideration
-and we are not to think of ourselves only
Abu Hurayrah (RA) reported that Allahs Messenger
(ﷺ) said “If anyone relieves a Muslims hardship in
this world then Allah will remove from him a hardship of the hereafter. And if
anyone conceals a Muslims fault then Allah will conceal (his fault) in the
world and the hereafter. And Allah goes on helping the slave as long as the
slave helps his brother. [Tirmidhi 1430, Muslim 2699, Abu Dawud 4946, Ahmed
7431]
-this hadith means there is no room in Islam for selfishness.
-me, myself and I; this is the mentality of the society of which we live in.
But the golden rule which was established by Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ)
-and the previous prophets, is in conflict with the mentality of today's
society.
This hadith establishes the ethic of reciprocity,
-meaning do onto others the way you would like to be treated.
-this ethic is supposed to erode diseases of the heart including envy and bad
mindedness.
The great imam an Nawawi has defined envy as:
Al-Nawawî defines envy as: “… to desire for someone
who enjoys a blessing to become bereft of it, regardless of whether that
blessing is of a religious or worldly nature.”
Al-Ghazâlî says: “As far as envy is concerned, Islamic scholars define it as
the hatred of a blessing and the love that the one so blessed by it will become
bereft of it.”
Whenever people see those who enjoy the blessings of Allah
-sometimes they become angry
-they would like to dictate to Allah سبحانه
وتعالىٰ who to
bless
-they will even use black magic to break up man from wife
...And from these (angels) people learn that by
which they cause separation between man and his wife, but they could not thus
harm anyone except by Allah's Leave.... (Al-Baqarah 2:102)
The person with envy would like to dictate to Allah who to bless
-Allah (سبحانه وتعالىٰ) has said I will disperse my blessing to whom I please.
...But Allah chooses for His Mercy whom He
wills. And Allah is the Owner of Great Bounty. (Al-Baqarah 2:105)
In surah Falaq, Allah mentions black magic and envy side by side
-because whenever a person envies you
-they dabble in black magic to see the barakah taken away from you
Say: "I seek refuge with (Allah) the Lord
of the daybreak, (1) "From the
evil of what He has created; (2) "And from the evil of the
darkening (night) as it comes with its darkness; (or the moon as it sets or
goes away). (3)"And from the evil of the witchcrafts when they blow in the
knots, (4) "And from the evil of the envier when he envies."(5)
(Al-Falaq 113:1-5)
The Jews had worked black magic on the prophet to see the knowledge taken
off him.
The kuffaar of Europe envy the prophet for his Izza (honour), his good name
-so they use cartoons to try to disgrace him.
-however this had backfired
This hadith is not making takfir on those who act otherwise
-however if you do not wish for your brother what you wish for yourself
-you are suffering from weak emaan
-this is the sharh for the hadith
This is similar to the hadith;
Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (ﷺ)
said, "An adulterer, at the time he is committing illegal sexual
intercourse is not a believer; and a person, at the time of drinking an
alcoholic drink is not a believer; and a thief, at the time of stealing, is not
a believer." Ibn Shihab said: `Abdul Malik bin Abi Bakr bin `Abdur-Rahman
bin Al- Harith bin Hisham told me that Abu Bakr used to narrate that narration
to him on the authority of Abu Huraira. He used to add that Abu Bakr used to
mention, besides the above cases, "And he who robs (takes illegally
something by force) while the people are looking at him, is not a believer at
the time he is robbing (taking).[al-Bukhari (5578) and Muslim (57)]
The man committing the zina is not a believer whilst on the act
-but is still a Muslim
The man who steals or drinks is not a kaffir
-only the Khawarij refer to those who drink or steal as kuffaar
-and if he dies without making taubah from these acts
-it doesn’t mean he died a Kaffir
-he dies as a Muslim however not a Mu'min
-Allah (سبحانه وتعالىٰ) can forgive him
Verily, Allah forgives not that partners should
be set up with him in worship, but He forgives except that (anything else) to
whom He pleases, and whoever sets up partners with Allah in worship, he has
indeed invented a tremendous sin. (An-Nisa 4:48)
There are Muslims who may celebrate your downfall, during hardship
-a Muslim should not be envious
-a man is a believer only if his neighbour is safe from his tongue and hands
Narrated Abdullah ibn Mas'ud: Allah's Messenger
(ﷺ) said, "Allah Most High has allotted you your
characters just as He has allotted you your provisions. Allah Most High gives
worldly things to those whom He loves and those whom He does not love, but He
gives religion only to those whom He loves, so he who is given religion by Allah
has been loved by Him. By Him in Whose hand my soul is, a man is not a Muslim
till his heart and tongue are submissive, and he is not a believer till his
neighbour is safe from injurious behaviour on his part." [Ahmad and
Bayhaqi, in Shu'ab al-Iman transmitted it.]
Allah (سبحانه وتعالىٰ) predestines everything
The best person on the face of the earth is a person
-who is blessed with deen and dunya-a rich muslim
-the worst person on the face of the earth is a poor kaffir
19 THINGS PEOPLE ENVY YOU FOR THE MOST
1. WEALTH
2. HEALTH
-health is wealth
-a sick person can't work therefore don't abuse your health
-no one will employ a person with AIDS
3. YOUR KIDS
-a woman who can't give birth to kids can't see kids
4. DUNYA EDUCATION
5. YOUR WIFE
6. YOUR HUSBAND
-do not disclose bedroom secrets with other people
-else the women might seduce him
Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (RA) reported the Messenger
of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Indeed from the worst of people on the Day
of Resurrection is one who has marital relations with his wife and then spreads
her private matters.” [Sahih Muslim (2/1060) No. 1437]
Asma’ bint Yazeed, who said that she was with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ),
when men and women were sitting with him, and he said: “I think there are some
men who talk about what they do with their wives, and that there are some women
who talk about what they do with their husbands.” The people stayed silent.
[Asma’] said: “Yes, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah, [women] do that and [men]
do that!” He said, “Do not do that, for it is as if a male devil met a female
devil in the street and had intercourse with her whilst the people were
watching.” [Musnad Ahmad (Vol. 6 p.456) No. 27624]
7. YOUR TAQWA
-this is why a munafiq likes to slander Muslims because he envies you for your
deen
-the kuffaar also envy you
Many of the people of the Scripture (Jews and
Christians) wish that if they could turn you away as disbelievers after you
have believed, out of envy from their own selves, even, after the truth (that
Muhammad Peace be upon him is Allah's Messenger) has become manifest unto them.
But forgive and overlook, till Allah brings His Command. Verily, Allah is Able
to do all things. (Al-Baqarah 2:109)
8. RELIGIOUS KNOWLEDGE
-the Jews of Madina envied the rasul (ﷺ) for his knowledge.
-this was why they caste black magic on him.
9. YOUR YOUTH
-not every young person has good health
-youth and health is not the same thing
-many children in UK have diabetes
-their lifestyle is very static, they eat chocolate and sit at home watching TV
10. YOUR HOUSE
11. YOUR TRANSPORT (YOUR CAR)
-a person can have an evil eye on your car and you have an accident
“If there was [such thing as] bad omens in
anything, they would have been in houses, spouses and horses.” [Al-Bukhari and
Muslim]
12. YOUR FURNITURE
13. YOUR JEWELERY
-some people get killed for their Rolex watches and gold chains they wear
-one of the reasons why gold is haram for men is that it hurts the feeling of
the poor
14. YOUR BEAUTY/HANDSOMENESS
-some people throw acid on other people's faces because of their beauty
15. YOUR ELOQUENCE
-if you are erudite (can speak properly) it can cause envy
Narrated Ibn 'Umar: 'Two men came from the East
and addressed the people who wondered at their eloquent speeches. On that the
Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Some eloquent speech is as effective
as magic."' [Sahih Bukhari (7/19) No. 5146]
16. YOUR CLOTHING
-the poor people buy counterfeit of brands because they envy the rich
-this is why the rasul (saw) cursed the one who worship dinar and dirham
Abu Hurairah (RA) reported: The Prophet (ﷺ)
said, "May he be miserable, the worshipper of the dinar and dirham, and
the worshipper of the striped silk cloak. If he is given anything, he is
satisfied; but if not, he is unsatisfied." [Sahih Bukhari (4/34) No. 2886]
17. YOUR HAPPINESS AND SELF CONTENTMENT
Narrated By Abu Huraira (RA): The Prophet (ﷺ)
said, "Riches does not mean, having a great amount of property, but riches
is self-contentment." [al-Bukhari (6038) and Muslim (2287)]
18. YOUR PRIVATE PARTS
-you are not allowed to take bath naked with other men
-this can cause envy
Bahz ibn Hakim reported from his father who from
his grandfather that he asked the Prophet (ﷺ):
'from whom they should conceal their awrah and from whom not?' He said, “Guard
your awrah except from your wife and what your right hand possesses (female
slaves).” He asked, “O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) what when people are with each other?” He said,
“If it is possible that no one may observe your private parts, see that none
sees them.” He asked, “O Prophet (ﷺ) of Allah what if one of us is alone?” He said,
“But Allah has more right that people should be ashamed before Him.” [Sunan
Tirmidhi (5/97) No. 2769, Sunan Abu Dawud (4/40) No. 4017, Musnad Ahmad (5/3)
No. 20046]
19. YOUR NEIGHBOUR
-many at times you go for holiday and your neighbor looks after your house
-others breakdown your house when you are away
Luqman to his son, he said: “My son! I have
carried grass-hoppers and cast-iron but I have never seen anything heavier (to
bear) than a bad neighbour, and I have tasted all the bitterness, but I have
never tasted anything more bitter than poverty.” [Ibn Abi Shaybah in 'Musannaf'
(7/74) No. 34296 and al-Bayhaqi in 'Shu'ab al-Eman' (12/101) No. 9108]
20. YOUR IZZAH (HONOUR)
-on the newspapers all over the world the catholic priests make front page
headlines
-they abuse kids
-the kuffaar wished they could tarnish the izza of the shaikhs
-they use cartoon, movies to try to take away the honour of the rasul (ﷺ)
-but they can't do that because his honour is guaranteed by Allah
Have We not opened your breast for you (O
Muhammad (ﷺ)? (1) And removed from you your burden,
(2) Which weighed down your back? (3) And raised high your fame? (4)
(Ash-Sharh 94:1-4)
They (hyprocrites) say: "If we return to
Al-Madinah, indeed the more honourable ('Abdûllah bin Ubai bin Salul, the chief
of hyprocrites at Al¬Madinah) will expel therefrom the meaner (i.e. Allāh's
Messenger ﷺ)." But honour, power and glory belong to
Allāh, His Messenger (Muhammad ﷺ), and to the believers, but the hypocrites know
not. (Al-Munafiqun 63:8)
-the scholars of Islam say that the best thing to wish for others is divine
guidance
-because without this they can't answer the three questions in the grave
-this is why you should give da’wah
-but do not give it to anyone but only to those who show interest in Islam
-Allah (سبحانه وتعالىٰ) put a condition on you giving da’wah
Let there arise out of you a group of people
inviting to all that is good (Islam), enjoining Al-Ma'ruf (i.e. Islamic
Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do) and forbidding Al-Munkar
(polytheism and disbelief and all that Islam has forbidden). And it is they who
are the successful. (Aali Imran 3:104)
Therefore remind (men) in case the reminder profits (them). (Al-A'la 87:9)
"...Whosoever wishes to be removed from the
Fire (Hell) and admitted to Jannah should die with faith in Allah and the Last
Day; and he should treat others as he wishes to be treated..." [Sahih
Muslim (3/1472) No. 1844]
The hadith (wish for yourself what you wish for others)
-means you should hate misfortune for your brothers and sisters
-the way you hate it for yourself
-some people find this hadith very difficult to practice
-but it is very easy for sincere Muslims to practice
-whose hearts are free from envy, selfishness etc.
Polygamy is an integral part of Islam
-all over the world women take shahada more than men
-but few women offer reverts to marry their husbands
-they prefer her apostate from Islam than to marry their husbands
-and then call her a munafiq when she apostate
-the sahabah were not like this
Narrated Ibrahim bin Sa`d from his father from
his grandfather: `Abdur Rahman bin `Auf said, "When we came to Medina as
emigrants, Allah's Apostle established a bond of brotherhood between me and
Sa`d bin Ar-Rabi`. Sa`d bin Ar-Rabi` said (to me), 'I am the richest among the
Ansar, so I will give you half of my wealth and you may look at my two wives
and whichever of the two you may choose I will divorce her, and when she has
completed the prescribed period (before marriage) you may marry her.'
`Abdur-Rahman replied, "I am not in need of all that. Is there any
marketplace where trade is practiced?'
He replied, "The market of Qainuqa." `Abdur- Rahman went to that market the following day and brought some dried buttermilk (yogurt) and butter, and then he continued going there regularly. Few days later, `Abdur-Rahman came having traces of yellow (scent) on his body. Allah's Apostle asked him whether he had got married. He replied in the affirmative. The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Whom have you married?' He replied, 'A woman from the Ansar.' Then the Prophet ﷺ asked, 'How much did you pay her?' He replied, '(I gave her) a gold piece equal in weigh to a date stone (or a date stone of gold)! The Prophet said, 'Give a Walima (wedding banquet) even if with one sheep .'" [Sahih Bukhari (3/52) No. 2048]

And those who, before them, had homes (in Al-Madinah) and had adopted the Faith, love those who emigrate to them, and have no jealousy in their breasts for that which they have been given (from the booty of Banī An-Nadīr), and give them (emigrants) preference over themselves, even though they were in need of that. And whosoever is saved from his own covetousness, such are they who will be the successful. (Al-Hashr 59:9)
-the sahabah practiced the hadith literally even when death was looking at them in the face
Habeeb bin Abi Thaabit narrates that Haarith bin Hishaam, Ikrama bin Abi Jahal and Ayaash bin Rabee'ah (RA) were all fatally wounded during the Battle of Yarmook. When Haarith bin Hishaam asked for some water and was about to drink it, Ikrama looked at him. Haarith said, "Give the water to Ikrama." When Ikrama took the water, Ayaash looked at him. Ikrama therefore asked that the water be given to Ayaash. However, before the water could reach Ayaash he had already passed away. By the time the water reached the others, they had also passed away. [Mustadrak al-Haakim (3/270) No. 5058]
-only a person with a pure heart can practice this prophetic instruction of the rasul
Abu Hurairah (RA) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Beware of envy! Indeed the envy eats up good deeds like the fire eats up wood” [Sunan Abu Dawud (4/276) No. 4903]
Ibn Masood (RA) narrated the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Do not wish to be like anyone, except in two cases: (1) A man whom Allah has given wealth and he spends it righteously. (2) A man whom Allah has given wisdom (knowledge of the Qur'an and the Hadith) and he acts according to it and teaches it to others." [al-Bukhari (1409) and Muslim (816)]
Ibn 'Umar (RA) reported the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Envy is justified in regard to two types of persons only: a man whom Allah has given knowledge of the Qur'an, and so he recites it during the night and during the day; and a man whom Allah has given wealth and so he spends from it during the night and during the day." [Al-Bukhari (7529) and Muslim (815)]
