You Are On The Religion of Your Friend!
Man's nature is that he is a social human being and during his/her life he will meet and befriend many people, these friends will comfort and accompany you throughout different obstacles and challenges in your life, they are happy when you are happy and sad when you are sad, your concern is their and vice verse, however in our time many Muslims have seemed to have lost sight of those who are good be befriend and those who are not.
The seriousness of keeping good friends and companions is such that a friend could lead you to paradise or to hellfire, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) said:
يَـٰوَيْلَتَىٰ لَيْتَنِى لَمْ أَتَّخِذْ فُلَانًا خَلِيلًۭا ٢٨
"Ah! Woe to me! Would that I had never taken so-and-so as a friend! (Al-Furqan 25:28)
For the Muslim youth, this concern is on the mind of every mother and father when they send their children to school or when their children leave the house, who are they going with? Who are their friends are college? What do they talk about? But this is not restricted to children only; rather people of all ages need to be cautious in befriending and socialising with the wrong crowd. As for the one who should befriend, first of all he should be the Muslim who believes in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and Last Day and not a disbeliever, nor should you befriend those who disobey Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and the evidence for this is the following ayah,
لَّا تَجِدُ قَوْمًۭا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ يُوَآدُّونَ مَنْ حَآدَّ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ وَلَوْ كَانُوٓا۟ ءَابَآءَهُمْ أَوْ أَبْنَآءَهُمْ أَوْ إِخْوَٰنَهُمْ أَوْ عَشِيرَتَهُمْ ۚ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ كَتَبَ فِى قُلُوبِهِمُ ٱلْإِيمَـٰنَ وَأَيَّدَهُم بِرُوحٍۢ مِّنْهُ ۖ وَيُدْخِلُهُمْ جَنَّـٰتٍۢ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهَا ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ خَـٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا ۚ رَضِىَ ٱللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ وَرَضُوا۟ عَنْهُ ۚ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ حِزْبُ ٱللَّهِ ۚ أَلَآ إِنَّ حِزْبَ ٱللَّهِ هُمُ ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَ ٢٢
You (O Muhammad SAW) will not find any people who believe in Allah and the Last Day, making friendship with those who oppose Allah and His Messenger (Muhammad SAW ), even though they were their fathers, or their sons, or their brothers, or their kindred (people). (Al-Mujadilah 58:22)
حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي
شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ، عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ أَبِي
الْجَعْدِ، حَدَّثَنَا أَنَسُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ قَالَ
بَيْنَمَا أَنَا وَالنَّبِيُّ، صلى الله عليه وسلم خَارِجَانِ مِنَ
الْمَسْجِدِ فَلَقِيَنَا رَجُلٌ عِنْدَ سُدَّةِ الْمَسْجِدِ فَقَالَ يَا
رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَتَى السَّاعَةُ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم "
مَا أَعْدَدْتَ لَهَا " فَكَأَنَّ الرَّجُلَ اسْتَكَانَ ثُمَّ قَالَ يَا
رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا أَعْدَدْتُ لَهَا كَبِيرَ صِيَامٍ وَلاَ صَلاَةٍ
وَلاَ صَدَقَةٍ، وَلَكِنِّي أُحِبُّ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ. قَالَ "
أَنْتَ مَعَ مَنْ أَحْبَبْتَ ".
Narrated Anas bin Malik: While the Prophet (ﷺ) and I were coming out of the mosque, a man met us outside the gate. The man said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! When will be the Hour?" The Prophet (ﷺ) asked him, "What have you prepared for it?... but I love Allah and His Apostle." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "You will be with the one whom you love." [Sahih Al Bukhari: (9/93) Hadith 7153) & (9/89) Hadith 267]
Moreover, you should befriend the Muslims who remain you of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and your duty towards Him, those who encourage you from evil, those when you ask for advise, they give you advise from the Qur'an and Sunnah, those who do not backbite other Muslims nor do they swear and lie but rather choose the best words. They are those who remember the Ummah of Muhammad (ﷺ) much, talking about the affairs of the Muslims always and refrain from talking about matters that are of no benefit and they are those that have the best of manners.
Friendship based upon the Deen of Islam and for the sake of the Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is the best of bonds, whereas friendship based on materialistic bonds, such as status and wealth are of no benefit and will be a source of regret on the Day of Judgment, if your friends do not obey Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and have no concern for Islam and the Muslims. The Messenger Muhammad (ﷺ) said,
" ثَلاَثٌ مَنْ كُنَّ فِيهِ وَجَدَ حَلاَوَةَ الإِيمَانِ أَنْ يَكُونَ اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَحَبَّ إِلَيْهِ مِمَّا سِوَاهُمَا، وَأَنْ يُحِبَّ الْمَرْءَ لاَ يُحِبُّهُ إِلاَّ لِلَّهِ، وَأَنْ يَكْرَهَ أَنْ يَعُودَ فِي الْكُفْرِ، كَمَا يَكْرَهُ أَنْ يُقْذَفَ فِي النَّارِ "
"Whoever loves for the sake of Allah, hates for the sake of Allah, give for the sake of Allah and withholds for the sake of Allah has completed his faith."
[It was related by al-Bukhari and Muslim. (40 Hadith 13]
And it has been said: "Nobody is given anything besides his Islam better than a righteous friend."
ٱلْأَخِلَّآءُ يَوْمَئِذٍۭ بَعْضُهُمْ لِبَعْضٍ عَدُوٌّ إِلَّا ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ ٦٧
Friends on that Day will be foes one to another except Al-Muttaqun (pious - see V.2:2) (Az-Zukhruf 43:67)
Therefore the friends you have and the environment you live in effects your belief and behaviour, for example, if you look to how many Muslims have been affected by living amongst kuffar (disbelievers), to the extent that many Muslims have adopted their beliefs and customs. Therefore the effect a bad close friend or friends would have is even greater and friendships are based on mature understanding and likes, for this reason choosing a good friend is very important and Muhammad (ﷺ) said hadith,
حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ بَشَّارٍ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَامِرٍ، وَأَبُو دَاوُدَ قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي مُوسَى بْنُ وَرْدَانَ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ " الرَّجُلُ عَلَى دِينِ خَلِيلِهِ فَلْيَنْظُرْ أَحَدُكُمْ مَنْ يُخَالِلُ "
Abu Huraira (RA) reported that Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “A man is on the religion of his friend, so let each of you observe whom he be friends.” [Sunan Tirmidhi (4/589) No. 2378, Sunan Abu Dawud (4/259) No. 4833, Musnad Ahmad (2/334) No. 8398]
