SHARH ON THE 40 HADEETH OF IMAM AN NAWAWI: HADITH NUMBER 4

                                                بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

- Hadeeth Number 4

SHARH OF THE 40 HADEETH NUMBER 4:
''EMBRYOLOGY IN QUR’AN AND SUNNAH''

On the authority of Abdullah ibn Mas’ood (RA), who said: The Messenger of Allah (
), and he is the truthful, the believed, narrated to us, "Verily the creation of each one of you is brought together in his mother’s womb for forty days in the form of a nutfah (a drop), then he becomes an alaqah (clot of blood) for a like period, then a mudghah (morsel of flesh) for a like period, then there is sent to him the angel who blows his soul into him and who is commanded with four matters: to write down his rizq (sustenance), his life span, his actions, and whether he will be happy or unhappy (i.e., whether or not he will enter Paradise). By the One, other than Whom there is no deity, verily one of you performs the actions of the people of Paradise until there is but an arm’s length between him and it, and that which has been written overtakes him, and so he acts with the actions of the people of the Hellfire and thus enters it; and verily one of you performs the actions of the people of the Hellfire, until there is but an arm’s length between him and it, and that which has been written overtakes him and so he acts with the actions of the people of Paradise and thus he enters it." It was narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim.

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Mas`ood (r.a)

The biography of Abdullah ibn Mas`ood

-as a boy, he was a shepherd in Makkah working for Uqbah ibn Mu'eet
-he was the 6th person to embrace Islam
-therefore he was of al-muhajiroon (those early of our ummah)

When he embraced Islam, he abandoned his work for the service of Muhammad (
)
-he was then known as the man who carried the sandals of the Rasool (
) - "sahib an-na'lain"
-he was loved for his sincerity and taqwa
-and the Prophet treated him as his family
-so many thought he was from ahlul-bayt
-the Rasool (pbuh) treated those who worked for him as family members

Abu Musa reported: When I and my brother came from Yemen we used to consider Ibn Mas'ud and his mother amongst the members of the household of Allah's Messenger (
) because of their visiting them frequently and staying there for long (periods of) time. [Sahih Muslim, Book 31, Hadith #6017]

He was blessed with a sweet voice;

-people cried when they heard his recitation of al Qur'an

On the authority of Alqama who said: A man who came to Umar Ibn al-Khattab as he was standing on the plain of Arafat and said: ‘I have come, O Amir al-Mumineen, from Kufa where I left a man filling copies of the Qur’aan from memory.’ Umar became very angry and paced up and down beside his camel, fuming. ‘Who is he?’ he asked. ‘Abdullah Ibn Masood,’ replied the man. Umar's anger subsided and he regained his composure. ‘Woe to you,’ he said to the man. ‘By Allah, I don't know of any person left who is more qualified in this matter than he is. Let me tell you about this.’ Umar continued: ‘One night the Messenger of Allah (
) was having a conversation with Abu Bakr about the situation of Muslims. I was with them. When the Prophet () left, we left with him also and as we passed through the mosque, there was a man standing in Prayer whom we did not recognise. The Prophet () stood and listened to him, then turned to us and said, “Whoever wants to read the Qur’an as fresh as when it was revealed, then let him read according to the recitation of Ibn Umm Abd.” After the Prayer, as Abdullah sat making supplications, the Prophet () said, “Ask and it will be given to you. Ask and it will be given to you.” I said to myself, I should go to Abdullah Ibn Masood straight away and tell him the good news of the Prophet’s () ensuring acceptance of his supplications. I went and did so but found that Abu Bakr had gone before me and conveyed the good news to him. By Allah, I have never yet beaten Abu Bakr in the doing of any good.’ [Mustadrak al-Haakim (2/246) No. 2893, ad-Dhahabee Classified it Sahih on the conditions of Bukhari and Muslim]

The Prophet said to learn the Qur'an from 4 people:

Narrated by Masruq, 'Abdullah (bin Mas'ud) was mentioned before 'Abdullah bin 'Amr. The latter said, "That is a man I continue to love because I heard Allah's Apostle
saying, ' learn the recitation of the Qur'an from (any of these) four persons: 'Abdullah bin Masud, Salim the freed slave of Abu Hudhaifa, Ubai bin Kab, and Muadh bin Jabal." I do not remember whether he mentioned Ubai first or Muadh. [Sahih Bukhari (5/27) No. 3758]

1. Abdullah ibn Mas’ood

2. Salim the freed slave of Abu Hudhaifa
3. Ubai ibn Ka’ab
4. Muadh ibn Jabal

Ibn Mas’ood fought in every battle alongside the Prophet (
)
-he was known for his bravery
-he said he would be the one to recite Qur'an in front of the kuffaar,
-but would get beaten by them profusely
-he was the 1st man to recite in the precincts of the Ka’ba

On the authority of Sha'bee who said: 'Umar ibn al-Khattab was on a night's journey and he saw a caravan and the night was pitch black. He told a man to call them. They were asked: "Where are you coming from?" Abdullah ibn Masood answered and said: "We are coming from fajj Ameeq - the Deep Valley referring to an ayah of the Holy Quran (Surah 22:27)." They were then asked: "And where are you going?" Ibn Masood said: "Bayt Ateeq, referring to the Quranic name for the Ka'bah 'The Ancient House'." Umar then said: "Verily there's a scholar amongst you." So Umar ordered a man to ask them: "Which part of the Quran is the greatest?" Ibn Masood replied: "He is Allah other than whom there's no god, the Ever-Living. (ayatul kursee)." Then they were asked: "Which part of the Quran is most clear in justice?" Ibn Masood replied: "Verily Allah has commanded that we do justice and be proficient in doing our duties (Surah 16:90)." Then Umar asked them: "Which part of the Quran is most profound." Ibn Masood answered: "Whosoever did an atoms weight of good shall see it then (Surah 99:7-8)." Then Umar asked them: "Which part of the Quran gives the most hope?" Ibn Masood replied: "Say O My servants who have wronged themselves by committing sins do not give up from the mercy of Allah. (Surah 39:53)." Umar then asked them: "Is Abdullah ibn Masood with you?" The people in the caravan said: "By Allah yes."' [Majmua Takhreej al-Din al-Maqdisi (pg. 7) No. 6]

Verily, Allāh enjoins Al-Adl (i.e. justice and worshipping none but Allāh Alone - Islāmic Monotheism) and Al-Ihsān [i.e. to be patient in performing your duties to Allāh, totally for Allāh's sake and in accordance with the Sunnah (legal ways) of the Prophet
in a perfect manner], and giving (help) to kith and kin (i.e. all that Allāh has ordered you to give them e.g., wealth, visiting, looking after them, or any other kind of help, etc.): and forbids Al-Fahshā' (i.e all evil deeds, e.g. illegal sexual acts, disobedience of parents, polytheism, to tell lies, to give false witness, to kill a life without right, etc.), and Al-Munkar (i.e all that is prohibited by Islāmic law: polytheism of every kind, disbelief and every kind of evil deeds, etc.), and Al-Baghy (i.e. all kinds of oppression), He admonishes you, that you may take heed. (An-Nahl 16:90)

So whosoever does good equal to the weight of an atom (or a small ant), shall see it. (7)
And whosoever does evil equal to the weight of an atom (or a small ant), shall see it.(8) (Az-Zalzalah 99:7-8)

Say: "O 'Ibādī (My slaves) who have transgressed against themselves (by committing evil deeds and sins)! Despair not of the Mercy of Allāh, verily Allāh forgives all sins. Truly, He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (Az-Zumar 39:53)

Ibn Mas'ood said no ayah was revealed that he didn't know about or where it was sent down

Narrated By 'Abdullah (bin Mas'ud): By Allah other than Whom none has the right to be worshipped! There is no Surah revealed in Allah's Book but I know at what place it was revealed; and there is no Verse revealed in Allah's Book but I know about whom it was revealed. And if I know that there is somebody who knows Allah's Book better than I, and he is at a place that camels can reach, I would go to him. [Sahih Bukhari, Vol 6, Book 61, Hadith #524]

-he worked for Umar who wanted to pay him but he preferred not to take a salary

The Prophet
said:

On the authority of Ali (RA) the Messenger of Allah (
) said: "If I am to chose anyone as a leader (Ameer) without consulting the Muslims, it would be Ibn Umm 'Abd (Ibn Masood)." [Musnad Ahmad (1/76) No. 566]

Ibn Mas'ood migrated to Ethiopia twice and then to Madina

-he was a humble and meek Sahabi without a strong tribe to back him

Why wasn't Bilal sent to Ethiopia?
-because Quraish would said they were runaway slaves

On his deathbed, he said he wanted forgiveness of his sins
-he'd refused a salary and Uthman wanted to give his past salaries to his many daughters

Abdullah ibn Mas’ud reported that the Prophet (
) said, ‘Whoever recites surah al Waqiah at night would never encounter poverty’ [Ibn as-Sunni 620, Bayhaqi]

-he died 34 years after the hijrah of the Rasool (pbuh)
-he was born to teach and he taught even on his deathbed

SHARH OF THIS HADEETH NUMBER 4

The nutfah means sperm mixed with ovum
-these are the fluid discharges from man and woman when conceiving

Verily, We have created man from Nutfah drops of mixed semen (discharge of man and woman), in order to try him, so We made him hearer, seer. (Al-Insan 76:2)

Read! In the Name of your Lord, Who has created (all that exists), (Al-'Alaq 96:1)

Has created man from a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood). (Al-'Alaq 96:2
)

-ova are larger than sperm
-a baby resembles the parent who ejaculated first upon conception
-this hadeeth is talking about embryology
-which is the development of the baby in the womb of the mother

The alaqah is like a leech, clinging on to the womb of the woman
-Dr Keith Moore is a leading doctor in Embryology (he's from Toronto, CA)
-he stated that Muhammad (pbuh) living in the 7th century, in a desert,
-would have this knowledge only from receiving revelation from his Lord (swt)
-in his book, THE DEVELOPING HUMAN, he said the Qur'an helped him write his book

Keith L. Moore {Click]

Correlation of Qur'an and Embryology: Click

The alaqah sucks blood from the placenta, so it's very powerful
-the behavior is exactly like a leech

Joe Leigh Simpson, a leading scientist, also said of Muhammad (
)
-that he needed a very powerful microscope
-for him to be so specific of his descriptions of the embryo

So let man see from what he is created! (5) He is created from a water gushing forth (6) Proceeding from between the back-bone and the ribs, (7) (At-Tariq 86:5-7)

The Qur'an is so specific that is explains from where the sperm gushes

-yet Muhammad (
) was not a scientist, so he had divine revelation

Verily, We have created man from Nutfah drops of mixed semen (discharge of man and woman), in order to try him, so We made him hearer, seer. (Al-Insan 76:2)

Some people frown when a woman gives birth to a girl

-but this is the fault of the man because he determines the sex of the child
-because of the type of chromosome he releases [X for woman and Y for boy]
-this is Allah's hikma

The fetus goes through 3 layers of development:

And indeed We created man (Adam) out of an extract of clay (water and earth). (Al-Mu'minun 23:12)

Thereafter We made him (the offspring of Adam) as a Nutfah (mixed drops of the male and female sexual discharge) (and lodged it) in a safe lodging (womb of the woman). (Al-Mu'minun 23:13)

Then We made the Nutfah into a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood), then We made the clot into a little lump of flesh, then We made out of that little lump of flesh bones, then We clothed the bones with flesh, and then We brought it forth as another creation. So blessed be Allāh, the Best of creators. (Al-Mu'minun 23:14)

Nutfah - sperm mixed with the ovum

-the male and female sensual discharges are lodged in a safe place, the womb
-then the nutfah becomes a clot [alaqah] which clings on to the womb
-getting its blood from the placenta
-the word "alaq" impressed the scientists because it was a specific word, not general

From the clot forms a lump of flesh, then with bones

Professor Marshall Johnson, from TJ University (PA)

-a scientist who was also impressed with Muhammad (saw)
-he said he had divine intervention

The fetus can hear after 24 weeks
-after 28 weeks, it develops sight where the retina becomes sensitive to light
-hearing comes first and then sight

Has there not been over man a period of time, when he was nothing to be mentioned? (1) Verily, We have created man from Nutfah drops of mixed semen (discharge of man and woman), in order to try him, so We made him hearer, seer. (2) (Al-Insan 76:1-2)

SUGGESTIONS:

a) Don’t upset your wife when she is pregnant because the child will take on the traits of the mother during her pregnancy

QUESTION: IS ABORTION ALLOWED IN ISLAM?

ANSWER:

Hanbali madhab - it is allowed during the first 40 days of pregnancy
-this is NOT a liberal madhab
-if a woman is raped, you can't tell her she must give birth to the child
-or she will hate that child
-so we promote abortion - full stop - and we make no qualms about it

QUESTION: IS MORNING AFTER PILLS PERMITTED?
YES

Abortion is halal during the first 6 weeks of pregnancy
-the ruh was not blown into the child yet
-because the baby is an alaqah before the 6 weeks of pregnancy

I don't know why people make a big issue about abortion
-we don't know what circumstances caused her to get pregnant
-maybe she was raped by a family member

QUESTION: IS SURROGACY ALLOWED IN ISLAM?

ANSWER:

-surrogacy is HARAM because of its implications & ramifications
-see 58:2

Those among you who make their wives unlawful (Az-Zihār) to them by saying to them "You are like my mother's back." They cannot be their mothers. None can be their mothers except those who gave them birth. And verily, they utter an ill word and a lie. And verily, Allāh is Oft-Pardoning, Oft-Forgiving. (Al-Mujadilah 58:2)

Surrogacy is sperm mixed with ovum, mixed in a lab,

-and then implanted in the womb of another woman
-you're 'renting' her womb for 9 months
-she's paid to carry this baby
-the scholars who say this is haram argue that
-the surrogate mother might become emotionally attached to the baby
-who'd get custody? The one who carried the baby or the one who is biologically the mother
-the baby would grow up confused, feeling it has two mothers

The 2nd group of scholars says surrogacy is HALAL
-because it’s the right of every couple to have kids
-they said since its halal to hire a wet-nurse to give suck to a baby, surrogacy is also halal

To Allāh belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth. He creates what He wills. He bestows female (offspring) upon whom He wills, and bestows male (offspring) upon whom He wills. (Ash-Shura 42:49)

Or He bestows both males and females, and He renders barren whom He wills. Verily, He is the All-Knower and is Able to do all things. (Ash-Shura 42:50)

WHAT IS THE CORRECT OPINION?
-if the man has two wives and one wife carries the baby for the other wife, this is halal
-otherwise it is haram

There are 3 layers of development - the nutfah, the alaqah, mudghah
-and the angel comes in the first 40 days of development
-to write down the child's livelihood, his lifespan and disposition
-these are all part of Allah's qadr

DESTINY - we can do things to improve it
-sometimes we suffer poverty because of sin (example)

It was narrated from Thawban that the Messenger of Allah (
) said: "Nothing increases one's life span except righteousness and nothing repels the Divine decree except supplication, and a man may be deprived of provision by a sin that he commits."' [Sunan Ibn Majah (5/152) No. 4022, Musnad Ahmad (5/277) No. 22440, Mustadrak al-Haakim (1/670) No. 1814, Sahih Ibn Hibban (3/153) No. 872, al-Sunan al-Kubra al-Nasa'i (10/380) No. 11775]

-if you want to live a rich, long life, keep your family ties

Anas Ibn Malik narrated: I heard the Messenger of Allah (
) say: “Whoever would like his provision to be increased and his lifespan to be extended, let him uphold the ties of kinship.” [al-Bukhari (2067) and Muslim (2557)]

Narrated By Jubair bin Mut'im: That he heard the Prophet (
) saying, "The person who severs the bond of kinship will not enter Paradise." [Al-Bukhari (5984) and Muslim (2556)]

And that man can have nothing but what he does (good or bad), (An-Najm 53:39)

Verily! Allāh will not change the good condition of a people as long as they do not change their state of goodness themselves (by committing sins and by being ungrateful and disobedient to Allāh). But when Allāh wills a people's punishment, there can be no turning back of it, and they will find besides Him no protector. (Ra'd 13:11)

Allah 'tala never takes away prosperity unless you abandon your deen

LIFESPAN
-some of you believe it is fixed
-if you believe this, Shaikh will refute you

Narrated By Abu Huraira: The angel of death was sent to Moses and when he went to him, Moses slapped him severely, spoiling one of his eyes. The angel went back to his Lord, and said, "You sent me to a slave who does not want to die." Allah restored his eye and said, "Go back and tell him (i.e. Moses) to place his hand over the back of an ox, for he will be allowed to live for a number of years equal to the number of hairs coming under his hand." (So the angel came to him and told him the same). Then Moses asked, "O my Lord! What will be then?" He said, "Death will be then." He said, "(Let it be) now." He asked Allah that He bring him near the Sacred Land at a distance of a stone's throw. Allah's Apostle (
) said, "Were I there I would show you the grave of Moses by the way near the red sand hill." [al-Bukhari (1339) and Muslim (2372)]

If the lifespan is fixed, why is it that Adam was able to change his mind?

-lifespan is destiny, not predestination
-by you finding a wife it is destiny
-so if you do the conditions, you will find a pious wife
-if a calamity was written for you, it’s possible for you to wipe it out

Allāh blots out what He wills and confirms (what He wills). And with Him is the Mother of the Book (Al-Lauh Al-Mahfûz) (Ra'd 13:39)

Salman (RA) reported that Allah’s Messenger (
) said, ‘Nothing averts the decree except supplication and nothing but piety prolongs life.” [Sunan Tirmidhi (4/448) No. 2139, Musnad Ahmad (5/280) No. 22466]

DISPOSITION:

-your amal is a part of your emaan
-if you're sincere, Allah 'tala will make it easier for you to do righteous deeds
-if you're a munafiq, you will not have the tawfiq (ability) to do righteousness
-your success with your amal is if you have TAQWAH

TAQWAH: to place between yourself and the wrath of Allah 'tala a barrier

And whosoever fears Allāh and keeps his duty to Him, He will make a way for him to get out (from every difficulty). (At-Talaq 65:2)

And He will provide him from (sources) he never could imagine. And whosoever puts his trust in Allāh, then He will suffice him. Verily, Allāh will accomplish his purpose. Indeed Allāh has set a measure for all things. (At-Talaq 65:3)

Abu Huraira narrated the Messenger of Allah (
) said: "Faith has over seventy branches or over sixty branches, the most excellent of which is the declaration that there is no god but Allah, and the humblest of which is the, removal of what is injurious from the path: and modesty is the branch of faith." [al-Bukhari (8) and Muslim (56)]

-you can become a kaafir with one amal, such as black magic, spying for kuffaar, insulting Allah 'tala or His Rasool (saws)
-the man who married his father's wife also died as a kaafir

Narrated By Al-Bara' ibn Azib: I met my uncle who was carrying a standard. I asked him: 'Where are you going?' He said: 'The Apostle of Allah (
) has sent me to a man who has married his father's wife. He has ordered me to cut off his head and take his property.' [Sunan Abu Dawud (4/157) No. 4457, Sunan al-Nasa'i (6/109) No. 3332, Sunan al-Darime (2/205) No. 2239, Musnad Ahmad (4/290) No. 18580]

And Allāh would never make your faith (prayers) to be lost (i.e. your prayers offered towards Jerusalem). Truly, Allāh is full of kindness, the Most Merciful towards mankind. (Al-Baqarah 2:143)

-people become sad because they forget Allah 'tala

They have forgotten Allāh, so He has forgotten them. Verily, the hypocrites are the Fāsiqûn (rebellious, disobedient to Allāh). (At-Tawbah 9:67)

-sad people live their lives on PROZAC [anti-depressant tablets]
-the shaytan is their constant intimate companion

And whosoever turns away (blinds himself) from the remembrance of the Most Beneficent (Allāh) (i.e. this Qur'ān and worship of Allāh), We appoint for him Shaitān (Satan ¬ devil) to be a Qarīn (an intimate companion) to him. (Az-Zukhruf 43:36)

-these people hear voices, are schizophrenic or bipolar
-the mental diseases are because they forgot Allah so He (swt) forgets them

People are sad:

1) Because they forget Allah 'tala

2) They forget His (swt)’s deen

"But whosoever turns away from My Reminder (i.e. neither believes in this Qur'ān nor acts on its orders, etc.) verily, for him is a life of hardship, and We shall raise him up blind on the Day of Resurrection." (Ta-Ha 20:124)

He will say: "O my Lord! Why have you raised me up blind, while I had sight (before)." (Ta-Ha 20:125)

Two men were in New York looking at the Empire building

-they were smoking ganja and one man thought he own that tall building

The happiness of going to nightclubs, casinos, drinking is a lie
-some of you end up broke
-galis are men with a lot of girls
-jaahiliyyah gives everyone a raw deal
-it destroys you emotionally, financially,

The only road to happiness is to be on our deen?

Narrated By Abu Huraira (RA): The Prophet (
) said, "Riches does not mean, having a great amount of property, but riches is self-contentment." [al-Bukhari (6038) and Muslim (2287)]

By the One, other than Whom there is no deity, verily one of you performs the actions of the people of Paradise until there is but an arm’s length between him and it, and that which has been written overtakes him, and so he acts with the actions of the people of the Hellfire and thus enters it; and verily one of you performs the actions of the people of the Hellfire, until there is but an arm’s length between him and it, and that which has been written overtakes him and so he acts with the actions of the people of Paradise and thus he enters it."It was narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim.

Some of you will act like the people of paradise, till you're only away from it by one arm's length

-but you don't enter Paradise because, in the dunya, you backbite or accuse people falsely
-so these people will come to take away your good deeds on Judgment Day

Abu Hurairah (RA) reported: Messenger of Allah (
) said, "Do you know who the bankrupt is?" They said: "The bankrupt among us is one who has neither money with him nor any property." He said, "The real bankrupt of my Ummah would be he who would come on the Day of Resurrection with Salat, Saum and Sadaqah (charity), (but he will find himself bankrupt on that day as he will have exhausted the good deeds) because he reviled others, brought calumny against others, unlawfully devoured the wealth of others, shed the blood of others and beat others; so his good deeds would be credited to the account of those (who suffered at his hand). If his good deeds fall short to clear the account, their sins would be entered in his account, and he would be thrown in the (Hell) Fire." [Sahih Muslim (4/1997) No. 2581]

Muflis - is a bankrupt person who comes with a mountain of good deeds on Judgment Day

-but because he was harming people in the dunya,
-Allah 'tala will take away his salah, zakah, sawm and hajj
-perhaps he never paid back borrowed money

SHARH ON THE 40 HADEETH OF IMAM AN NAWAWI: HADITH NUMBER 3

 بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

-406- Hadeeth Number 3

SHARH OF THE 40 HADEETH: HADEETH NUMBER 3

29.09.2012 to 01-10-12 (Night Dars)

HADEETH 3

On the authority of Abdullah, the son of Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (
) say, "Islam has been built on five [pillars]: testifying that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing the salah (prayer), paying the zakat (obligatory charity), making the hajj (pilgrimage) to the House, and fasting in Ramadhan." It was related by al-Bukhari and Muslim.

It is the hadeeth narrated ibn Umar r.a

-where the Prophet (
) said Islam is built on five pillars:

1. SHAHADAH

2. SALAH

3. ZAKAH

4. HAJJ

5. SAWM

-this hadeeth is agreed upon
-meaning it is found in both sahih books (Bukhari and Muslim)

WHO IS IBN UMAR (r.a)?

His name is Abdullah ibn Umar and his kunya was Abu Abdur Rahman

-he was born 614 C.E
-the prophet (
) became a prophet 610 C.E
-Umar used to have 3 wives in jaahiliyyah
-and only one of them came to Islam, Zainab
-she is the mother of ibn Umar

She was known for her piety and she passed this to her son
-he was so pious he used to present himself for jihad at a tender age of 14

Ibn Umar (RA) narrated: I was presented before Allah’s Messenger (
) for the army when I was fourteen years old. But, he did not enlist me. Then, the next year I was presented to him for the army being fifteen years and he took me. Nafi’ said: I narrated this hadith to Umar ibn Abdul Aziz and he said, “The limit between a minor and a major (is this).” Then he wrote (to his officers) that those who attain the age of fifteen may be given share in spoils of war. [al-Bukhari 2664 and Muslim (1868)]

-he was so short he used to tip toe so he would look tall
-for the prophet to choose him for jihad
-but he was chosen for the first time when he was 15
-and the first battle he participated in was that of the ditch
-so 15 years is the official age for adulthood in Islam

When Ali fought Mu’awiya some sahabah took a neutral stance
-and ibn Umar was one of them
-but when Hassan ibn Ali abdicated his khilafah in favour of Mu’awiya,
-ibn Umar gave his bay'a to Mu’awiya
-why did he do so without hesitation?
-because the prophet (saw) praised what Hassan did

Hassan once climbed the back of the Prophet in the masjid and he said
-this son of mine will bring peace between two warring factions

He also gave his bay'a to unite the Muslims
-and when the Muslims became united under Mu’awiya they were able to progress
-and he was able to conquer the whole of North Africa
-with the exception of Egypt

Ibn Umar died at the age of 79, 74 years after the hijra

EXPLANATION OF THE HADEETH 3

The shahada translates to; nothing deserves to be worshipped but Allah

-and Muhammad (
) is His last messenger
-some people translate it to mean there is no God but Allah
-but Buddha is a god with a small g because it is a false god

The grave that people worship is an idol

اللهم لا تجعل قبري وثنا يعبد، اشتد غضب الله على قوم اتخذوا قبور أنبيائهم مساجد

Yahya related to me from Malik from Zayd ibn Aslam from Ata ibn Yasar that the Messenger of Allah () said, "O Allah! Do not make my grave an idol that is worshipped. The anger on those who took the graves of their Prophets as places of prostration was terrible." [Muwatta Malik (1/223) No. 570, Musannaf Abdur Razzaq (1/406) No. 1587, Musnad Ahmad (2/246) No. 7352]

-3 types of people worship a false deity:

1.      THE SOOFI

2. THE SHI'ITE

3. BERAILVIS

-these people call themselves muslims but they worship a false deity-the grave
-this is because he does not understand the kalimah of shahada
-he recites it for culture not by conviction
-and he does not recite Arabic and have no clue what he is reciting
-so the first condition of shahada, knowledge, is missing

The Prophet (
) said:

Thawban reported that Allah’s Messenger (
) said, "The Hour will not be established until a tribe from my Ummah joins the polytheists and until a tribe from my Ummah worship idols." [Sunan Tirmidhi (4/499) No. 2219, Sunan Abu Dawud (4/97) No. 4252, Sunan Ibn Majah (5/97) No. 3952 and Mustadrak al-Haakim (4/496) No. 8390]

-these people who worship false deities are referred to as liars by Allah
-and they have no one to explain to them the meaning of the kalimah

Surely, the religion (i.e. the worship and the obedience) is for Allah only. And those who take Auliya' (protectors and helpers) besides Him (say): "We worship them only that they may bring us near to Allah." Verily, Allah will judge between them concerning that wherein they differ. Truly, Allah guides not him who is a liar, and a disbeliever. (Az-Zumar 39:3)

You (Alone) we worship, and You (Alone) we ask for help (for each and everything). (Al-Fatihah 1:5)

-when they were reciting the ayah above it came from their lips not their hearts.

The shahada has 2 parts:
1. NEGATION

2. AFFIRMATION

-an atheist is practising half of the shahada

To believe in Allah does not make you a Muslim
-you have to reject the taghoot and then believe in Allah
-then you become special
-Allah said:

There is no compulsion in religion. Verily, the Right Path has become distinct from the wrong path. Whoever disbelieves in Taghut and believes in Allah, then he has grasped the most trustworthy handhold that will never break. And Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower. (Al-Baqarah 2:256)

Shahadah also has 7 conditions:

1. KNOWLEDGE OF WHAT IT MEANS
-so those who recite it without knowing what they are saying, are still not Muslims
-Allah said:

And those whom they invoke instead of Him have no power of intercession; except those who bear witness to the truth (i.e. believed in the Oneness of Allah, and obeyed His Orders), and they know (the facts about the Oneness of Allah) . (Az-Zukhruf 43:86)

-the Prophet (
) said:

من مات وهو يعلم أنه لا إله إلا الله، دخل الجنة

2.      On the authority of 'Uthman that the Messenger of Allah () said; "Whoever dies knowing that nothing deserves to be worshipped except Allah will enter the Paradise." [Sahih Muslim (1/55) No. 26, Musnad Ahmad (1/65) No. 464]

-he used the word know, ilm

2. YAQEEN
-certainty, you should have no doubts about Islam
-if you do you become a kaafir
-Allah said:

Only those are the believers who have believed in Allah and His Messenger, and afterward doubt not but strive with their wealth and their lives for the Cause of Allah. Those! They are the truthful. (Al-Hujurat 49:15)

3. TO BELIEVE IN YOUR HEART AND TO TESTIFY WITH YOUR TONGUE

-even Allah testified to the shahada

Allah bears witness that La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), and the angels, and those having knowledge (also give this witness); (He is always) maintaining His creation in Justice. La ilah illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), the All-Mighty, the All-Wise. (Aali Imran 3:18)

-so who are you not to testify
-this is why Abu Talib died as a kaafir

4. TO SURRENDE TO QUR'AN AND SUNNAH
-you can’t have one foot in Islam and one foot in jaahiliyyah

O you who believe! Enter perfectly in Islam (by obeying all the rules and regulations of the Islamic religion) and follow not the footsteps of Shaitan (Satan). Verily! He is to you a plain enemy (Al-Baqarah 2:208)

5. TO CONDEMN ALL SHADES OF FALSEHOOD

-some scholars said this means you were not faking the recitation of the shahada
-you didn’t recite it because you wanted to marry a pretty Muslimah
-or to benefit from the Muslim’s wealth or to marry a rich Muslim man

6. SINGULARITY OF DEVOTION
-Allah said:

Say (O Muhammad ): "Verily, my Salat (prayer), my sacrifice, my living, and my dying are for Allah, the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, Jinns and all that exists). (Al-An'am 6:162)

"He has no partner. And of this I have been commanded, and I am the first of the Muslims." (Al-An'am 6:163)

-the grave worshippers do not practice this condition
-because they worship the grave besides Allah

7. AL WALAA WAL BARAA
-to love the friends of Allah and to hate His enemies
-Allah said:

O you who believe! Take not My enemies and your enemies (i.e. disbelievers and polytheists, etc.) as friends, showing affection towards them, while they have disbelieved in what has come to you of the truth (i.e. Islamic Monotheism, this Qur'an, and Muhammad ), and have driven out the Messenger (Muhammad ) and yourselves (from your homeland) because you believe in Allah your Lord! If you have come forth to strive in My Cause and to seek My Good Pleasure, (then take not these disbelievers and polytheists, etc., as your friends). You show friendship to them in secret, while I am All-Aware of what you conceal and what you reveal. And whosoever of you (Muslims) does that, then indeed he has gone (far) astray, (away) from the Straight Path. (Al-Mumtahinah 60:1)

Indeed there has been an excellent example for you in Ibrahim (Abraham) and those with him, when they said to their people: "Verily, we are free from you and whatever you worship besides Allah, we have rejected you, and there has started between us and you, hostility and hatred for ever, until you believe in Allah Alone," except the saying of Ibrahim (Abraham) to his father: "Verily, I will ask for forgiveness (from Allah) for you, but I have no power to do anything for you before Allah." Our Lord! In You (Alone) we put our trust, and to You (Alone) we turn in repentance, and to You (Alone) is (our) final Return, (Al-Mumtahinah 60:4)

You (O Muhammad SAW) will not find any people who believe in Allah and the Last Day, making friendship with those who oppose Allah and His Messenger (Muhammad
), even though they were their fathers, or their sons, or their brothers, or their kindred (people). For such He has written Faith in their hearts, and strengthened them with Ruh (proofs, light and true guidance) from Himself. And We will admit them to Gardens (Paradise) under which rivers flow, to dwell therein (forever). Allah is pleased with them, and they with Him. They are the Party of Allah. Verily, it is the Party of Allah that will be the successful. (Al-Mujadilah 58:22)

-if you are a munafiq and waste of space you can’t practice al walaa wal baraa
-because of what Allah said in the above ayah
-they love the enemies of Allah and His messenger

Some scholars mention an 8th condition of the shahada, dying on the shahada
-but we won’t preach this
-because it is understood inside of certainty
-i mention this to you so you know it is talked about sometimes

‘Muhammad is the messenger of Allah’ is part of the shahada
-A Christian man who does not believe in the trinity
-does not believe Jesus is god, can he go to paradise?

It is narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira that the Messenger of Allah (
) said: "By Him in Whose hand is the life of Muhammad, any Christian or Jew who heard about me and died whilst regecting me, such a person is in the hell fire to abide there forever." [Sahih Muslim (1/134) No. 153 and Musnad Ahmad (2/350) No. 8594]

-NO he will never until he accepts Muhammad ()
-because it is part of the shahada to believe in Muhammad ()
-as the last prophet and messenger of Allah

WHAT IS THE MEANING OF MUHAMMAD DUR RASULULLAH
-it means:

1. HE WAS THE LAST PROPHET

-Allah said:

Muhammad (
) is not the father of any man among you, but he is the Messenger of Allah and the last (end) of the Prophets. And Allah is Ever All¬Aware of everything. (Al-Ahzab 33:40)

2. HE WAS THE BEST PROPHET

Abu Hurairah (RA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (
) said: “My likeness and the likeness of the prophets before me is the likeness of a person who built a house, made it beautiful and made it complete, except the place of a stone in the corner. So people began to go round and to wonder at him and say: ‘Why have you not placed this stone?’ I am that stone and I am Khatam an-Nabiyyin (the Seal of the Prophets)". [al-Bukhari (3535) and Muslim (2286)]

Abu Huraira narrated the Messenger of Allah (
) said: “I am the most noble of Adam’s descendants on the Day of Resurrection. I am the first whose grave shall be opened. I am the first to offer intercession. I am the first whose intercession shall be accepted.” [Sahih Muslim (4/1782) No. 2278]

3. THE HADEETH IS HUJJAH

-it is evidence because Allah said:

Nor does he speak of (his own) desire. (An-Najm 53:3)

It is only an Inspiration that is inspired. (An-Najm 53:4)

-the hadeeth is revelation and has the same power in making things halal and haram on you
-e.g. sadaqatul fitr was made fard by the hadeeth

Abu Musa Ash’ari reported that Allah’s Messenger (
) said, “Wearing silk and gold is forbidden to the men of my Ummah. But (they are) allowed to their women.” [Sunan Tirmidhi (4/217) No. 1720, Sunan An-Nasa'i (8/161) 5148]

-gold was made haram by hadeeth for Muslim men
-surah fatiha was made compulsory on you to recite in salah by hadeeth

Narrated By 'Ubada bin As-Samit: Allah's Apostle said, "Whoever does not recite Al-Fatiha in his prayer, his prayer is invalid." [Sahih Bukhari, Vol 1, Book 12, Hadith #723]

-so the Parvezi who doesn’t believe in hadeeth is not a Muslim

You become a kaafir when you do 3 things to Muhammad (
):

1. IF YOU REJECT HIM
-like the Christians and Jews

Verily, those who disbelieve (in the religion of Islam, the Qur'an and Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) from among the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) and Al-Mushrikun will abide in the Fire of Hell. They are the worst of creatures. (Al-Baiyinah 98:6)

2. IF YOU INSULT OR RIDICULE HIM

If you ask them (about this), they declare: "We were only talking idly and joking." Say: "Was it at Allah, and His Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) and His Messenger (SAW) that you were mocking?" (At-Tawbah 9:65)

Make no excuse; you have disbelieved after you had believed. If We pardon some of you, We will punish others amongst you because they were Mujrimun (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.). (At-Tawbah 9:66)

-just to laugh at a shirt of his makes you a kaafir
-this is ijmaa of the Muslims
-so we do not agree with Al Baani

Al-Albani: (We don’t think this accurate is in absolute sense, because it is possible that this insult (sabb) or reviling (satam) is the result of ignorance, bad upbringing, negligence, And lastly it could be with intent and knowledge, and in that case, it is a clear apostasy, of which there's no doubt. But if it carries either of the former situations which I pointed at. Then it's best Islamic to refrain from takfir than to rush towards it.)Source: Silsilat al-Huda wa al-Nur, tape nr. 820, min. 46:03).

-he went against the ijmaa of the Muslims
-and was a ghulaat murjia but we are not going to make takfir on him in this room

Al-Imam Ishaq Ibn Rahawayh said: (All Muslims are in consensus that whoever curses Allah or curses His Messenger, or rejects something from what Allah revealed, or killed a prophet, that he is a kafir; and even if he accept what was revealed by Allah. And Al-Khattabi said, "I don't know of anyone who disagrees with the obligation of his killing." And Muhammad Ibn Sahnun said that the scholars are in consensus that the one who curses the Messenger is a Kafir; and whoever doubts his Kufr is a Kafir.) Taken from (Kitab al-Sarim al-Maslul 'ala satim al-Rasul, by Ibn Taymiyya)

Abu al-Husain Muhammad Ibn Ahmad al-'Asqalani said: «The Mu'tazila of Baghdad and Basra, and all of ahl al-Qibla, there is no ikhtilaf between them concerning, that the one who doubts regarding the kafir then he himself is a kafir, because the doubter (sakk) concerning kufr there's no ‘iman for him, because he don't know kufr from ‘iman. So there's no dispute between the Umma, the Mu'tazila and other than them; that the doubter concerning the kafir is kafir!“ Taken from (Kitab al-Tanbih wa al-Radd 'ala ahl al-Ahwa' wa al-Bida’, by Muhammad Ibn Ahmad al-Malati)

3. IF YOU LIE ON MUHAMMAD (saw)

Narrated By Anas: The fact which stops me from narrating a great number of Hadiths to you is that the Prophet said: "Whoever tells a lie against me intentionally, then (surely) let him occupy his seat in Hell-fire." [Sahih Bukhari, Vol 1, Book 3, Hadith #108]

-the Soofis said they lie for the prophet not on him
-Abdullah Hakami told me if you lie on Muhammad you are a kaafir
-the soofis, Shi’tes and Berailvis do this

THE MERITS OF THE SHAHADA

1. IT WAS THE DA'WAH OF ALL THE PROPHETS

-Allah said:

And verily, We have sent among every Ummah (community, nation) a Messenger (proclaiming): "Worship Allah (Alone), and avoid (or keep away from) Taghut[] (all false deities, etc. i.e. do not worship Taghut besides Allah)." Then of them were some whom Allah guided and of them were some upon whom the straying was justified. So travel through the land and see what was the end of those who denied (the truth). (An-Nahl 16:36)

2. IT IS ALLAH'S RIGHT OVER US

"O Mu'adh! Do you know what Allah's Right upon His slaves is?" I said, "Allah and His Apostle know best." The Prophet said, "To worship Him (Allah) Alone and to join none in worship with Him (Allah). Do you know what their right upon Him is?" I replied, "Allah and His Apostle know best." The Prophet said, "Not to punish them (if they do so)." [Bukhari Volume 9, Book 93, Number #470]

3. IT IS THE FIRST CALL OF THE DA'EE IN DARUL KUFR OR DARUL HARB

Narrated By Ibn Abbas: When the Prophet
sent Muadh to Yemen, he said to him, "You are going to a nation from the people of the Scripture, so let the first thing to which you will invite them, be the Tauhid of Allah. If they learn that, tell them that Allah has enjoined on them, five prayers to be offered in one day and one night. And if they pray, tell them that Allah has enjoined on them Zakat of their properties and it is to be taken from the rich among them and given to the poor. And if they agree to that, then take from them Zakat but avoid the best property of the people." [Sahih Bukhari, Vol 9, Book 93, Hadith #469]

-therefore to call to Shari’ah in darul harb is not the manhaj of the prophet

4. IT IS THE KEY TO PARADISE

Muadh Ibn Jabal (RA) narrated the Messenger of Allah (
) said: "He whose last words (in life) were 'La ilaha-ill Allah' (None has the right to be worshipped but Allah) shall enter Paradise” [Sunan Abu Dawud (2/207) No. 3116, Musnad al-Bazzar (7/77) No. 2626, Tabarani in ‘al-Mu’jam al-Kabir’ (20/112) No. 221, Mustadrak al-Hakim (1/503) No. 1299]

On the authority of 'Uthman that the Messenger of Allah (
) said; "Whoever dies knowing that nothing deserves to be worshipped except Allah will enter the Paradise." [Sahih Muslim (1/55) No. 26, Musnad Ahmad (1/65) No. 464]

-if you die and your last word was the shahada, you shall be in the paradise
-but every key has teeth
-and the shahada has 7 teeth

Wahb ibn Munabbih was once asked, "Isn't the statement of la ilaha illa-llah the key to Paradise?" He answered, "Yes, but every key has ridges. If you come with the key that has the right ridges, the door will open for you. Yet if you do not have the right ridges the door will not open for you.” [Sahih Bukhari, (2/71), al-Asma' wa al-Sifat al-Bayhaqi (1/274), Hilyatul-Awliya Abu-Naeem al-Asbahani (4/66)]

5. IT CAUSES YOU TO GAIN THE INTERCESSION OF MUHAMMAD (saw)

Narrated by Saeed bin Al-Musaiyyab from his father who said: “when the time of death of Abu Talib approached, Allah’s Apostle(
) went to him and found Abu Jahl bin Hisham and Abdullah bin Abi Umayyia by his side. Allah’s Apostle said to Abu Talib, ‘O uncle! Say: None has the right to be worshipped except Allah (La ilaha illAllah), a sentence with which I shall be a witness i.e. intercede for you before Allah’. Abu Jahl and Abdullah ibn Umaiyya said, ‘O Abu Talib! Are you going to denounce the religion of your father Abdul Muttalib?’, Allah’s Apostle kept on inviting Abu Talib to say ‘Laa ilaha illAllah’ (i.e. None has the right to Worshipped except Allah) while they Abu Jahl and Abdullah kept on repeating their statement till Abu Talib said as his last statement that he was on the religion of his father Abdul Muttalib and thus he refused to say ‘None has the right to be worshipped except Allah’ (La ilaha illAllah). (Sahih Bukhari(Arabic/English) Vol.2 pg.248 No.442

6. BY RECITING THE SHAHADA ALL THE SINS OF THE REVERT ARE FORGIVEN AND ALL THE GOOD HE DID IN JAHILIYYAH WILL BE GIVEN TO HIM

On the authority of Abu Jabir heard Makhul say, "A very old man with sunken eyes came and said, `O Messenger of Allah, a man betrayed others and did immoral deeds, and there was no evil deed which he did not do. If (his sins) were to be distributed among the whole of mankind, they would all be doomed. Is there any repentance for him?' 'The Messenger of Allah said: "Have you become Muslim?" He said, "As for me, I bear witness that there is no God but Allah Alone, with no partner or associate, and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.'' The Prophet said: "Allah will forgive you for whatever you have done like that, and will replace your evil deeds with good merits." The man said: "O Messenger of Allah, even my betrayals and immoral actions?'' The Prophet said: "Even your betrayals and immoral actions." The man went away saying 'La ilaha illallah' and `Allahu Akbar.''' [Tafseer Ibn Abi Hatim (8/2735-2736) No. 15446, Tafseer Ibn Katheer (6/129)]

Ibn Shamasa narrated Amr ibn al-Aas said: “When Allah put the love of Islam into my heart, I came to the Prophet (SAW) to pledge my allegiance to him. He stretched out his hand towards me, but I said, ‘I will not pledge allegiance to you, O Messenger of Allah, until you forgive me my previous sins.’ The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said to me, ‘O ‘Amr, do you not know that Islam wipes out whatever sins came before it.’” [Musnad Ahmad (4/205) No. 17861, Sahih Muslim (1/112) No. 121]

7. IT IS THE ULTIMATE STATEMENT TO REJECT THE TAGHOOT

They had nothing against them, except that they believed in Allah, the All-Mighty, Worthy of all Praise! (Al-Buruj 85:8)

-the shahada is a political statement, it is the greatest statement
-you reject the courthouses of the taghoot
-the king said 'you committed treason against me' because it was such a political statement
-the shahada was interpreted as treason

8. ALLAH HIMSELF AND HIS ANGELS TESTIFY TO THE SHAHADA

-are you better than Allah

9. WITH THE RECITATION OF THE SHAHADA THE LIVES AND PROPERTIES OF THE MANKIND ARE PROTECTED

On the authority of Abdullah ibn Umar (RA), that the Messenger of Allah (
) said: I have been ordered to fight against the people until they testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and until they establish the salah and pay the zakat. And if they do that then they will have gained protection from me for their lives and property, unless [they commit acts that are punishable] in Islam, and their reckoning will be with Allah. It was related by al-Bukhari and Muslim.

-this is a merit of Shahada to mankind
-the purpose is to fight until there is not more fitna (shirk)

And fight them until there is no more Fitnah (disbelief and polytheism: i.e. worshipping others besides Allāh) and the religion (worship) will all be for Allāh Alone [in the whole of the world[]]. But if they cease (worshipping others besides Allāh), then certainly, Allāh is All-Seer of what they do. (Al-Anfal 8:39)

UTHAYMEEN - KILLING WOMEN AND CHILDREN IN THE STATE OF WAR: http://youtu.be/xqVcLPt75hg?t=2m20s

-Abu Qatadah said you're allowed to kill the women and children of the kuffaar BUT
-only if they are killing your women and children

That is the right religion, so wrong not yourselves therein, and fight against the Mushrikûn (polytheists, pagans, idolaters, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allāh) collectively[], as they fight against you collectively. But know that Allāh is with those who are Al-Muttaqûn (the pious - see V.2:2). (At-Tawbah 9:36)

10. WITH SHAHADA, A PERSON JOINS ISLAMIC BROTHERHOOD/ SISTERHOOD

But if they repent, perform As-Salāt (Iqāmat-as-Salāt) and give Zakāt, then they are your brethren in religion. (In this way) We explain the Ayāt (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) in detail for a people who know. (At-Tawbah 9:11)

The believers are nothing else than brothers (in Islāmic religion). So make reconciliation between your brothers, and fear Allāh, that you may receive mercy. (Al-Hujurat 49:10)

Narrated by An-Nu'man bin Bashir: The Prophet (
) said: “The likeness of the believers in their mutual love, mercy and compassion is that of one body; when one part of it suffers, the rest of the body joins it in staying awake and suffering fever.” [al-Bukhaari (6011) and Muslim (2586)]

11. THE SHAHADA IS THE GREATEST FORM OF DHIKR

Amr ibn Shu’ayb reported from his father who from his grandfather that the Prophet (
) said, “The best of supplication is the supplication on the day of Arafah. And the best of what I said - I and the Prophets before me is:
لاَ إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ، وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ المُلْكُ وَلَهُ الحَمْدُ، وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ
"Laa ilaaha ill Allah waHdahu laa shareeka lah, lahul mulku wa lahul Hamdu yuhyi wa yumeetu wa huwa Hayyun laa yamoot, bi yadihil khayr, wahuwa ‘alaa kulli shay’in qadeer" (There is no God but Allah Who is Alone. He has no partner. To Him belongs the dominion and to Him belongs all praise And He is over all things powerful). [Sunan Tirmidhi (5/572) No. 3585]

... and the remembering (praising, etc.) of (you by) Allāh (in front of the angels) is greater indeed [than your remembering (praising, etc.) Allāh in prayers, etc.]. And Allāh knows what you do. (Al-'Ankabut 29:45)

12. WHEN SHAHADAH IS RECITED WITH SINCERITY AND CONVICTION, IT IS YOUR PROTECTION FROM KUFR, SHIRK, HYPOCRISY AND HERESY

-heresy means zandaqa
-when the grave worshippers recite Shahada, they don't know what they are reciting
-if they knew what it meant, they would know there is NO deity
-worthy of worshiped but Allah 'tala
-so he recites out of culture, not by his conviction
-the grave is an idol people worship

اللهم لا تجعل قبري وثنا يعبد، اشتد غضب الله على قوم اتخذوا قبور أنبيائهم مساجد

3.      Yahya related to me from Malik from Zayd ibn Aslam from Ata ibn Yasar that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said, "O Allah! 7352]

13. THE SHAHADA IS A DAILY CALL FOR ALL THE MUSLIMS

Narrated Ibn Mas'ud Allah's Apostle taught me the Tashah-hud as he taught me a Sura from the Quran, while my hand was between his hands. (Tashah-hud was) all the best compliments and the prayers and the good things are for Allah. Peace and Allah's Mercy and Blessings be on you, O Prophet! Peace be on us and on the pious slaves of Allah, I testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and I also testify that Muhammad is Allah's slave and His Apostle. (We used to recite this in the prayer) during the lifetime of the Prophet, but when he had died, we used to say, "Peace be on the Prophet." [Bukhari, Volume 8, Book 74, Number 281]

-some of us say 'assalamu alayka' but this is obsolete
-you should say 'assalamu alan-nabi' [see above hadeeth]

-the Berailvis say 'alayka' as their evidence to worship the Prophet (
)

14. THE SHAHADA IS THE FIRST THING MUNKAR AND NAKEER WILL ASK US ABOUT IN THE GRAVE

-they will ask: who is your Lord? Who is your Prophet? What is your religion?

15. WITHOUT THE SHAHADA IN OUR HEARTS AND ON OUR LIPS, ALL OUR PIOUS DEEDS ARE NULLIFIED

Allah said:

"Verily, Allāh accepts only from those who are Al-Muttaqûn (the pious - see V.2:2)." (Al-Ma'idah 5:27)

And indeed it has been revealed to you (O Muhammad
), as it was to those (Allāh's Messengers) before you: "If you join others in worship with Allāh, (then) surely (all) your deeds will be in vain, and you will certainly be among the losers." (Az-Zumar 39:65)

Muhammad (pbuh) was warned about shirk, so what about you and I?

-someone like Mother Theresa will get no barakah on Judgment Day

As for those who disbelieve, their deeds are like a mirage in a desert. The thirsty one thinks it to be water, until he comes up to it, he finds it to be nothing, but he finds Allāh with him, Who will pay him his due (Hell). And Allāh is Swift in taking account. (An-Nur 24:39)

16. IT IS FOR THE SAKE OF THE SHAHADA THAT WE WAGE JIHAD

-we don't do it for isms and schism, such as democracy, capitalism, tribalism
-we die for the shahada

Narrated By Abu Musa: A man came to the Prophet
and asked, "A man fights for war booty; another fights for fame and a third fights for showing off; which of them fights in Allah's Cause?" The Prophet said, "He who fights that Allah's Word (i.e. Islam) should be superior, fights in Allah's Cause." [al-Bukhari (123) and Muslim (1904)]

2ND PILLAR OF ISLAM: SALAH

Definition - it is an act of ibaadah beginning with takbeer and ending with tasleem
-contains specific words and acts
-salah is a gift given to the ummah

Anas bin Malik narrated that fifty prayers, were made obligatory on the Prophet on the night of mi'raj. Then they were reduced till five remained. Then, a voice called, "O Muhammad our word is never changed. For you, indeed, with these five will accrue (reward of) fifty." [Sunan Tirmidhi (1/417) No. 213, Musnad Ahmad (3/161) No. 12662, al-Bukhari (3207) and Muslim (162)]

SALAH is the 1st act we will be asked about on Judgment Day
-if it's messed up, Allah 'tala won't look at our other acts of worship

Jabir (RA) reported that Allah’s Messenger (
) said, “Between a man (Muslim) and shirk and disbelief lies neglect of salah.” [Sahih Muslim (1/88) No. 82, Sunan Tirmidhi (5/13) No. 2620, Sunan Abu Dawud (4/219) No. 4678, Sunan Ibn Majah (2/181) No. 1078, Sunan An-Nasa'i (1/232) No. 463, Musnad Ahmad (3/370) No. 15021]

-the difference between Muslims and kaafirs is salah

Abdullah ibn Shaqiq Uqayli (RA) reported, saying “The companions of Muhummad (
) did not regard neglect of any of the deeds as disbelief as they did (neglect) of Salah." [Sunan Tirmidhi (5/14) No. 2622 and Mustadrak al-Haakim (1/48) No. 12 who said it met the conditions of al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Narrated By Abdullah bin Masud: I asked Allah's Apostle
, "O Allah's Apostle! What is the best deed?" He replied, "To offer the prayers at their early stated fixed times." I asked, "What is next in goodness?" He replied, "To be good and dutiful to your parents." I further asked, what is next in goodness?" He replied, "To participate in Jihad in Allah's Cause." I did not ask Allah's Apostle anymore and if I had asked him more, he would have told me more. [al-Bukhari (527) and Muslim (85)]

Salah at its prescribed time is the best deed we can do

-Muslim leaders who are given tamkeen (power and authority), establishes salah and make it fard
-to "perform" it is to perform it on an individual level
-to "establish" it is to make it fard in a country

Those (Muslim rulers) who, if We give them power in the land, (they) order for Iqamat-as-Salāt. [i.e. to perform the five compulsory congregational Salāt (prayers) (the males in mosques)], to pay the Zakāt and they enjoin Al-Ma'rûf (i.e. Islāmic Monotheism and all that Islām orders one to do), and forbid Al-Munkar (i.e. disbelief, polytheism and all that Islām has forbidden) (Al-Hajj 22:41)

Abu Huraira narrated the Messenger of Allah (
) said: “The five daily prayers, Friday prayer to the following Friday prayer, and Ramadan to the following Ramadan are expiations for sins as long as one abstains from major sins." [Sahih Muslim (1/209) No. 233 and Musnad Ahmad (2/400) No. 9186]

We're to perform salah in wudu and make niyyah (intention) for each salah
-we can't make intention at Fajr for asr
-we must face the Qiblah (as much as possible)
-and we're to pray in a clean place in clean clothes (or our salah is baatil)
-we’re punished in the grave if there is urine on our clothes
-pray according to the Sunnah not like Shiites who pray with their hands down by their side
-when the Jews stand by the Wailing Wall, they have hands down by their sides
-the Rasool (saw) prayed with the right hand over the left, on his chest

Wa'il b. Hajr said "I prayed with Prophet Muhammad (
) and he put his right hand over his left hand over his chest." [Sahih Ibn Khuzaimah (Vol. 1, pg. 243) No. 479, Abu Dawud (Vol. 1, pg. 260) No. 759]

Pray at prescribed times, not too early or too late

-we can join prayers if we're busy or a traveller
-Umar allowed the baker to join his prayers
-you cannot be fidgeting in salah excessively
-its best for men to pray at the masjid and the women at home

The Prophet (
) said: Do not stop your women from going to the mosque and their homes are better for them.” [Hakim in his Mustadrak Vol.1, p.209.]

Abi Qatadah reported that the Messenger of Allah (
) said "The worst thief is one who steals in his prayer." Then the companions asked, "How can someone steal from his prayer?" Prophet () answered, "He does not complete his Ruku and Sadjah with perfection." [Musnad Ahmad (5/310) No. 22695, Sunan Darimi (1/350) No. 1328, Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah (1/331) No. 663]

-the worst thief is the man who steals from salah
-when we get up out of ruku’u, if our back is not straight; this is a way to seal from salah.

3RD PILLAR OF ISLAM: ZAKAH

Literally, this means to purify and to grow
-this is to give 2.5% of our YEARLY savings to the poor
-it does not refer to your yearly income but your savings
-if you have 1,000 USD, the zakat is 25.00 USD
-if you have LESS than 1,000.00 USD, you pay no zakah
-you would RECEIVE zakah

Allah 'tala told us who is entitled for zakah in 9:60

As-Sadaqāt (here it means Zakāt) are only for the Fuqarā'[] (poor), and Al-Masākin[] (the poor) and those employed to collect (the funds); and for to attract the hearts of those who have been inclined (towards Islām); and to free the captives; and for those in debt; and for Allāh's Cause (i.e. for Mujāhidûn - those fighting in the holy wars), and for the wayfarer (a traveller who is cut off from everything); a duty imposed by Allāh. And Allāh is All-Knower, All-Wise. (At-Tawbah 9:60)

The poor, the masakin even poorer, and those who collect zakah receive zakah

-poets were paid for reciting poetry but they no longer are paid for this
-the best people to give zakah to are the widows, orphans and the mujahideen
-the mujahideen are running out of bullets
-sometimes they capture a land but give it up because they have no more firepower

Uqbah bin Amir (RA) narrated: 'I heard the Messenger of Allah (
) and he was on the minbar when he read the verse: "(And make ready against them all you can of power, including steeds of war...) [8:60], Verily strength is in throwing (i.e. shooting), verily strength is in throwing, verily strength is in throwing.” [Sahih Muslim (Vol. 3 pg. 1522) No. 1917]

Punishment for refusing to pay zakah:

-takfir was made on them by Abu Bakr,
-he killed them and buried them in the graveyard of the kuffaar
-and took their ladies as concubines

Abu Hurayra said, "When the Messenger of Allah (
), died and Abu Bakr was khalifa and those of the Arabs who were going to reject rejected, 'Umar said, 'How can we fight people when the Messenger of Allah said, "I am commanded to fight people until they say, 'There is no god but Allah.' Whoever says that, his property and life are protected from me, except when there is a legal right to them, and his reckoning is up to Allah."?' Abu Bakr said, 'By Allah, I will fight anyone who makes a distinction between prayer and zakat! Zakat is the right which is due on wealth. By Allah, if they refuse me a nose- rope which they used to pay to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, I will fight them for refusing it!' 'Umar said, 'By Allah, then I realised that Allah had expanded Abu Bakr's breast in respect of the decision to fight and I recognised that it was the truth." [al-Bukhari and Muslim]

-according to Shari’ah, if the wife stayed with the man who takfir was made on,
-she should be taken as a concubine

And those who hoard up gold and silver [Al-Kanz: the money, the Zakāt of which has not been paid], and spend it not in the Way of Allāh, -announce unto them a painful torment. (At-Tawbah 9:34)

The tafseer of this ayah:

"Whoever is made wealthy by Allah and does not pay the Zakat of his wealth, then on the Day of Resurrection his wealth will be made like a bald-headed poisonous male snake with two black spots over the eyes. The snake will encircle his neck and bite his cheeks and say, 'I am your wealth, I am your treasure.' Bukhari Volume 2, Book 24, Number 486.

-their wealth would become as snakes, biting their cheeks
-this hadeeth was to explain 9:34

THE MERITS OF ZAKAH:

1. It purifies the heart of the giver from selfishness, hypocrisy and greed for wealth

2. It purifies the heart of the recipient from envy, jealousy and hatred

-the gap between the rich and poor is widening
-they kill each other so zakah purifies the heart of the recipient from hatred of the rich

3. It purifies the wealth of the giver
-if you don't pay zakah, that portion of your wealth now becomes HARAAM money

4. It purifies the society from ills and vices
-corruption, degeneracy and debauchery
-it prevents prostitution and crime

5. It reduces the sufferings of the poor, needy and destitute

6. It shows the superiority of Islam over capitalism and the greed of materialism

-in capitalist society, they take money from the poor and give the rich in the name of interest
-but in Islam, we do the opposite, in the name of zakah

OCCUPY WALL STREET spread to 1000 cities worldwide

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (
) said: "Riba has seventy segments, the least serious being equivalent to a man committing adultery with his own mother." [Sunan Ibn Majah (3/337) No. 2274 and Mustadrak al-Haakim (2/43) No. 2259]

7. It shows the rest of the world that Islam is a complete package with a social program and economic system

-we have a judicial system, economic and social systems
-zakah is a social program catering for those less fortunate

8. It brings joy to the heart of the giver and receiver
-the kuffaar say Muhammad (pbuh) is the only man in history who brought a religion
-that was a COMPLETE PACKAGE
-combining religion and politics

...This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion. But as for him who is forced by severe hunger, with no inclination to sin (such can eat these above-mentioned meats), then surely, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (Al-Ma'idah 5:3)

How does it bring joy to the GIVER?

-if you're a millionaire going to Africa, seeing the kids with flies in their eyes
-and so skinny but with big bellies
-they look like they have the world on their shoulders
-putting a smile on the face of that child gives you happiness
-the giver can have his sins forgiven and be loved by Allah 'tala also

If you want to enjoy your wealth, share it

~THE SECRET TO ENJOY WEALTH IS TO SHARE YOUR WEALTH~

9. It is a means by which the giver has his sins forgiven and he is loved by Allah 'tala

10. It is a means to provide help for the mujahideen, the widows and the orphans

THE 4TH PILLAR OF ISLAM: HAJJ

-the scholars say it is pilgrimage to visit Allah's house (in Makah) once in your life time
-going to Madina without going to Makah, your hajj is not accepted
-hajj is Makah not Madina

FABRICATED: ‘Whoever performs the Hajj of the House (Ka’bah) and does not visit me has indeed treated me badly.’ [Silsilah-Daeefah No. 45, Fabricated- Mawdoo]

Hajj is a duty to Allah 'tala

...And Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah) to the House (Ka'bah) is a duty that mankind owes to Allah, those who can afford the expenses (for one's conveyance, provision and residence); and whoever disbelieves [i.e. denies Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah), then he is a disbeliever of Allah], then Allah stands not in need of any of the 'Alamin (mankind and jinns). (Aali Imran 3:97)

-we're to make pilgrimage to His (swt) house once in our lifetime
-if we have the means
-anyone who disbelieves in hajj as a pillar, is a disbeliever in Allah 'tala

Abu Hurayrah said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) gave a sermon (khutbah) and said: “O people, Allaah has enjoined Hajj upon you so do Hajj.” A man said, Is it every year, O Messenger of Allaah? He remained silent until the man had said it three times, then he said, “If I say yes, it will become obligatory and you will not be able to do it.” Then he said, “Do not push me to tell you more than what I have left you with, for those who came before you were destroyed because they asked too many questions and argued with their Prophets. If I command you to do a thing, do as much of it as you can, and if I forbid you to do something, then avoid it.” (Narrated by Muslim, 1337)

THE MANY VIRTUES OF HAJJ:

1. ALL OUR SINS ARE FORGIVEN BY THIS ONE DEED WHICH INCLUDES THE MAJOR AND MINOR SINS

Amr ibn al-‘Aas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: the Messenger of Allaah (
) said: “Hajj wipes out whatever (sins) came before it.” (Narrated by Muslim, 121).

On the authority of Abu Huraira that the Messenger of Allah (
) was asked which deed is best. He said, “Belief in Allaah and His Messenger.” He was asked, then what? He said, “Jihad for the sake of Allah.” He was asked, then what? He said, “An accepted Hajj.” [Narrated by al-Bukhari (26) and Muslim (83)]

CONDITIONS FOR HAJJ TO BE ACCEPTED:

1. It must be paid for with halal money

-a pimp cannot make hajj because his money is haram

2. The person must be a real Muslim
-a Berailvis, Goofi Soofi, Shiite, Parvezi or Qaadiyani’s hajj is wasted
-there is no barakah in their hajj because they are kuffaar

3. Stay away from disputes, fights and jim3aa during hajj

The Hajj (pilgrimage) is (in) the well-known (lunar year) months (i.e. the 10th month, the 11th month and the first ten days of the 12th month of the Islāmic calendar, i.e. two months and ten days). So whosoever intends to perform Hajj therein by assuming Ihrām), then he should not have sexual relations (with his wife), nor commit sin, nor dispute unjustly during the Hajj. And whatever good you do, (be sure) Allāh knows it. And take a provision (with you) for the journey, but the best provision is At-Taqwa (piety, righteousness, etc.). So fear Me, O men of understanding! (Al-Baqarah 2:197)

Abu Hurayrah (RA) who said: The Messenger of Allah (
) said: “Whoever performs Hajj and does not commit any obscenity [rafath] or commit any evil will go back (free of) sin as on the day his mother bore him.” [narrated by al-Bukhari (1521) and Muslim (1350)]

4. Do hajj with pure intention (niyyah)

-if you perform it because you want to buy goods to sell there, this is NOT a pure intention
-or if you make hajj to be called a "hajjie" (someone who is known for making hajj)
-Malcolm X was called al Hajji but he did NOT go with improper intention
-some people go on hajj to pick-pockets [steal]
Umar ibn al-Khattab said, 'I heard the Messenger of Allah (SAW), say, "Actions only go by intentions. Everyone gets what they intend..." [al-Bukhari (1) and Muslim (1907)]

4.      Imam Ahmad (bin Hanbal) said that "The principles of Islam are based on three hadith: the hadith of 'Umar that "deeds are judged only by intention," the hadith of 'A'isha, "Whoever introduces into our affairs that which does not belong, it is rejected," and the hadith of al-Nu'man b. Bashir, "The licit is clear and the illicit is clear." [Jama' ul-Uloom al-Hukum, Ibn Rajab (1/61)]

Ahmad ibn Hanbal said our deen is based upon 3 hadeeth

-actions are by intentions,
-whoever introduces into our affairs what does not belong shall have it rejected
-what is halal is clear/what is haram is clear

5. It must be done in accordance to the Sunnah of Muhammad (saw)
-on the 8th of Dhul Hijjah we go to Mina, then on the 9th Mount Arafat,
-then the Mount of Muzdalifah
-we come back to Mina after we make tawaaf
-we make the farewell tawaaf al 'wida

“Hajj is Arafah.” [Sunan Abu Dawud, book 10, #1944]

6. Don't follow hajj up with sins, major sins

-we can't return from hajj then drink alcohol, commit zina or steal
-because when we make hajj, we're like a new born babe

Abu Hurayrah (RA) who said: The Messenger of Allah (
) said: “Whoever performs Hajj and does not commit any obscenity [rafath] or commit any evil will go back (free of) sin as on the day his mother bore him.” [narrated by al-Bukhari (1521) and Muslim (1350)]

2. HAJJ IS THE JIHAD OF A WOMAN

-the ameer is NOT allowed to impose on the sisters to do jihad

Narrated `Aisha: (the mother of the faithful believers) I said, "O Allah's Apostle! We consider Jihad as the best deed." The Prophet said, "The best Jihad (for women) is Hajj Mabrur." [Sahih Bukhari (2/133) No. 1520]

-Umm Amara saved the life of the Rasool (saw) at the Battle of Uhud.

3. HAJJ IS YOUR TICKET TO PARADISE

Abu Huraira (RA) reported that the Prophet (
) said: “From one ‘umrah to another is an expiation for whatever (sins) come between them, and an accepted Hajj brings no less a reward than Paradise.” [Narrated by al-Bukhari (1773) and Muslim (1349)]

4. HAJJ ELIMINATES POVERTY AND SINS THE WAY THE BELLOWS PURIFY IRON AND SILVER WITH FIRE

‘Abd-Allaah ibn Mas’ood said: the Messenger of Allaah (
) said: “Keep on doing Hajj and ‘Umrah, for they eliminate poverty and sin just as the bellows eliminate impurities from iron and gold and silver.” (Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 810; al-Nasaa’i, 2631.

5. THE MUJAHID AND THE PILGRIM ARE BOTH GUESTS OF ALLAH 'TALA

Labayk Allahuma Labayk Labayk. La shareeka laka Labayk. Innal hamda wannimata laka wal mulk. La shareeka Lak

Ibn ‘Umar reported that the Prophet (
) said: “The one who fights for the sake of Allah and the pilgrim who goes for Hajj or ‘Umrah are all guests of Allaah. He called them and they responded; they ask of Him and He will give them.” (Narrated by Ibn Maajah, 2893)

"Here I am at your service, oh Lord, here I am - here I am. No partner do you have. Here I am. Truly, the praise and the favor are yours, and the dominion. No partner do you have."

Narrated By 'Abdullah bin 'Umar: The Talbiya of Allah's Apostle was : 'Labbaika Allahumma labbaik, Labbaika la sharika Laka labbaik, Inna-l-hamda wan-ni'mata Laka walmulk, La sharika Laka' (I respond to Your call O Allah, I respond to Your call, and I am obedient to Your orders, You have no partner, I respond to Your call, All the praises and blessings are for You, All the sovereignty is for You, And You have no partners with you.) [al-Bukhari (1549) and Muslim (1184)]

6. HAJJ IS A SIGN THAT YOU'RE A TRUE BELIEVER

Allah said:

and whoever disbelieves [i.e. denies Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah), then he is a disbeliever of Allāh], then Allāh stands not in need of any of the 'Alamīn (mankind and jinns). (Aali Imran 3:97)

7. HAJJ SHOWS THE UNITY OF MUSLIMS

-3 million Muslims are on Mount Arafat on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah
-3 million Muslims are in the Valley of Muzdalifah on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah
-people like to make hajj in a group with a shaikh so they learn how to
-else you may go and do it wrongly and then your hajj becomes bautil

8. HAJJ SHOWS THE UNIVERSALITY OF ISLAM

-when you're in Makkah, you pray with all different races
-this shows brotherhood and sisterhood
-Malcolm X (may Allah 'tala accept him) went there as a racist
-and came back as a real Muslim
-a Shaikh in Kenya was killed in Kenya in front of his family (these are black kuffaar)
-the white kaafir is not the only devil; what about the black kaafir or the Chinese, Indian, Hindus, etc.?
-Hindus in India worship an erect penis, its back, and they even shine it

Gay sex and porn magazines and casinos were not allowed in South Africa during the white man’s rule
-ANC - blacks from African National Congress
-they allow prostitution and gay marriages and casinos and porn and DVDs and videos
-on hajj, 3 million people are drinking zamzam so maybe 1000 have drunk from the SAME cup

9. IT BOOSTS THE LOCAL ECONOMY
-businessmen in Makkah and Madina are some of the richest people
-3 million people go to Hajj every year, and 2 million more during Ramadan for umrah
-because umrah in Ramadan is = to one hajj

“When the month of Ramadan arrives, go for ‘umrah, because `umrah in Ramadan is like accompanying me on Hajj.” [Sahîh al-Bukhârî (1764)]

10. HAJJ INCREASES YOUR LOVE FOR MAKKAH

-if you go to Makkah for hajj and die there, you'll be in Paradise

11. THE EXPERIENCE OF HAJJ REMINDS YOU OF DEATH
-because we're buried in the ihram as we were on hajj

12. HAJJ GIVES YOU A REASON TO ABANDON HARAM ACTIVITIES
-like zina, drinking alcohol and gambling
-a man will say 'can I come for a cup of coffee' [which is innuendo for zina]
-maybe she slept with him before but after hajj, she feels like a new person
-a hajji will not continue with haram activities

13. KISSING THE BLACK STONE IS A GREAT FULFILLMENT OF A SUNNAH

Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) said, after he kissed the Black Stone: “I know that you are only a stone and that you can neither benefit nor harm. If I had not seen the Prophet (
) kiss you, I would not have kissed you.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 1520; Muslim, 1720).

-the Rasool (pbuh) kissed the SAME stone
-the kaafirs say that the black stone is a god that we worship
-THAT is how evil they are
-Christian evangelists lie and say Allah means the 'moon god'
-we refute them with 41:37

And from among His Signs are the night and the day, and the sun and the moon. Prostrate not to the sun nor to the moon, but prostrate to Allah Who created them, if you (really) worship Him. (Fussilat 41:37)

14. WHEN WE MAKE TAWAF AROUND THE KAB'A WE WALK IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF IBRAHIM, MUSA, YOUNES, ESSA AND MUHAMMAD (
)

15. WHEN WE DRINK ZAMZAM, WE REMEMBER THE STORY OF HAJAR
-when she ran between the hills of Safa and Marwa
-where Allah 'tala gave her zamzam as a mercy

The Holy Prophet (
) said: “The water of Zamzam is for whatever it is drunk for.” (Narrated by Ibn Maajah, 3062; Ahmad, 14435. This is a hasan hadeeth; classed as hasan by Ibn al-Qayyim – may Allaah have mercy on him – in Zaad al-Ma’aad, 4/320).

-we drink it with the emaan that it will cure us of diseases

16. WHEN WE RUN BETWEEN THE HILLS OF SAFA AND MARWA, IT REMINDS US OF MOTHERLY LOVE
-that Hajar had for her baby

17. WHEN WE OFFER OUR SACRIFICE, WE REMEMBER THE OBEDIENCE OF IBRAHIM TO ALLAH
-who was willing to sacrifice Ismael his only son then

18. WHEN WE STONE THE JAMARAAT 3 TIMES, WE REMEMBER THE STRUGGLE OF IBRAHIM
-who struggled against the shaytan who told him NOT to sacrifice his son

20. WHEN WE RETURN FROM HAJJ AND REJOIN OUR FAMILIES, IT REMINDS US THAT WE WILL ONE DAY REJOIN THEM IN PARADISE

5TH PILLAR OF ISLAM: RAMADAN

-we are listing Ramadan as the 5th pillar only based on the 40th hadeeth regarding SAWM

Literal meaning of SAWN is abstention
-technical meaning is abstaining from food, drink, smoking and sexual intercourse
-from the adhan of Fajr to dusk (Maghrib)

Sahl ibn Sad reported that Allah’s Messenger (
) said, "The people will remain on the right path as long as they hasten the breaking of the fast." [al-Bukhari (1957) and Muslim (1098)]

-these are known as DAYLIGHT hours, regardless of where you live
-with the intention to seek Allah's countenance

a) we fast in order to gain taqwa

O you who believe! Observing As-Saum (the fasting) is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqun (the pious - see V.2:2). (Al-Baqarah 2:183)

On the authority of Suhail bin Abi Saleh from his father: ‘A man once asked Abu Hurayrah (RA), ‘What is al-taqwa?” He replied, “Have you ever taken a path filled with thorns?” The man replied, “I have.” Abu Hurayrah asked him, “What did you do?” He replied, “When I saw a thorn I would dodge it or pass over it or behind it.” Abu Hurayrah said, “That is al-taqwa.”’ [al-Zuhd al-Kabir al-Bayhaqi (p350-351) No. 963]

Taqwa is to place between yourself and Allah’s wrath a BARRIER

-by doing what is halal and abstaining from what is haram

Abu Huraira (RA) reported the Messenger of Allah (
) said, "Allah the Exalted and Majestic said: 'Every act of the son of Adam is for him, except As-Siyam (the fasting) which is (exclusively) for Me, and I will reward him for it.' Fasting is a shield. When anyone of you is observing fast, he should neither indulge in obscene language nor should he raise his voice; and if anyone reviles him or tries to quarrel with him, he should say: 'I am fasting.' By Him in Whose Hand the soul of Muhammad is, the breath of one observing Saum is sweeter to Allah than the fragrance of musk. The one who fasts, experiences two joys: he feels pleasure when he breaks the fast. He is joyful by virtue of his fast when he meets his Rubb." [al-Bukhari (1904) and Muslim (1151)]

Narrated from Abu Hurayrah (RA) that the Messenger of Allaah (
) said: “When Ramadan comes, the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained up.” [al-Bukhari (1899) and Muslim (1079)]

-we see people do haram things in Ramadan, though
-Iblīs is NOT in chains only the junior shayateen are chained

And (remember) when Shaitan (Satan) made their (evil) deeds seem fair to them and said, "No one of mankind can overcome you this Day (of the battle of Badr) and verily, I am your neighbour (for each and every help)." But when the two forces came in sight of each other, he ran away and said "Verily, I have nothing to do with you. Verily! I see what you see not. Verily! I fear Allah for Allah is Severe in punishment." (Al-Anfal 8:48)

THE MANY VIRTUES OF RAMADAN

1. IT KEEPS YOU IN TOUCH WITH THE HOLY QUR'AN

-we go for taraweeh prayers and finish al Qur'an

2. IT KEEPS YOU IN TOUCH WITH ALLAH 'TALA
-because we revise the Qur'an
-taraweeh can be 8 or 20 rakat
-8 is the Sunnah of Muhammad (saw) and 20 is the Sunnah of Umar

3. IT’S A MEANS TO HAVE OUR SINS FORGIVEN

-if we abstain from the major sins

Abu Huraira narrated the Messenger of Allah (
) said: "Whoever establishes prayers during the nights of Ramadan faithfully out of sincere faith and hoping to attain Allah's rewards (not for showing off), all his past sins will be forgiven." [al-Bukhari (37) and Muslim (759)]

4. FASTING IN RAMADAN MAKES YOU BECOME HEALTHY

-you are combating obesity because your stomach shrinks

اغْزُوا تَغْنَمُوا، وَصُومُوا تَصِحُّوا، وَسَافِرُوا تَسْتَغْنُوا
On the authority of Abu Huraira (RA) that the Messenger of Allah (
) said, “Take part in battles, and you will receive booty. Fast, and you will be healthy. Travel and you will find your sustenance.” [al-Mu’jam al-Awsat al-Tabarani (8/174) No. 8312]

5. FASTING IN RAMADAN TEACHES YOU SABR
-you don't even break your fast by one minute

And seek help in patience and As-Salat (the prayer) and truly it is extremely heavy and hard except for Al-Khashi'un [i.e. the true believers in Allah - those who obey Allah with full submission, fear much from His Punishment, and believe in His Promise (Paradise, etc.) and in His Warnings (Hell, etc.)]. (Al-Baqarah 2:45)

6. RAMADAN TEACHES US UNITY BECAUSE WE'RE FASTING WITH THE REST OF THE UMMAH

7. RAMADAN GIVES YOU A SENSE OF 'BELONGING'

-we belong to the ummah of Muhammad (pbuh)

O you who believe! Observing As-Saum (the fasting) is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqun (the pious - see V.2:2). (Al-Baqarah 2:183)

-only elderly, ill or pregnant women are not required to fast
-pregnant women do NOT make up the fast but they feed poor people (approx. $200 USD)

8. RAMADAN ENHANCES THE ISLAMIC BROTHERHOOD/ SISTERHOOD
-because we invite people to our homes to break our fast

9. RAMADAN IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR US TO WIPE OUT OUR MAJOR SINS
-we get the barakah from feeding a poor person

Abu Huraira (RA) reported the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said, "Allah the Exalted and Majestic said: 'Every act of the son of Adam is for him, except As-Siyam (the fasting) which is (exclusively) for Me, and I will reward him for it.' Fasting is a shield. He is joyful by virtue of his fast when he meets his Rubb."
[al-Bukhari (1904) and Muslim (1151)]

10. RAMADAN TEACHES US CONSCIENCE

-we don't lock ourselves in a room to eat and drink because we know
-Allah 'tala can see what man cannot
-it teaches us God-consciousness

11. RAMADAN SEPARATES THE SINCERE BELIEVERS FROM THE MUNAFIQEEN
-healthy people should fast, elderly and terminally ill are exempted
-the traveller makes up his fast

12. RAMADAN TEACHES US ADAPTABILITY
-because we can change the time we have our meals
-it's good for a believer to be flexible
-the kaafir is set in his ways

~ONLY A FOOL DOESN'T CHANGE~

13. RAMADAN IS A MEANS TO GAIN VICTORY OVER THE KUFFAAR

-the Battle of Badr (17th) Conquest of Makkah and Spain, the Battles of Hittin and Ain Jaloot -all during Ramadan
-if we're on the battlefield with the mujahideen on this date and we call it the Badr Offensive
-we might gain victory because the date is SO important
-or it's the 21st of Ramadan, which is when Makkah fell
-so these dates inspire the believers

When the Mujahideen got rid of Ghadafi, they called it the BADR OFFENSIVE

14. FASTING MAKES US FEEL THE HUNGER OF POOR PEOPLE SO WE BECOME CHARITABLE

15. FASTING MAKES US SAVE ON SPENDING BECAUSE WE EAT LESS

16. RAMADAN TEACHES US FASTING AND SELF-CONTROL BECAUSE ALL OF OUR ORGANS ARE FASTING

-hands, feet, lips, and our private parts

Abu Huraira (RA) narrated the Messenger of Allah (
) said: “There may be a fasting person who gets nothing more from his fast than hunger and thirst, and there may be a person who prays qiyaam and all he gets from his qiyaam is a sleepless night.” [Musnad Ahmad (2/373) No. 8843, Sunan Ibn Majah (2/591) No. 1690, Sunan al-Darime (2/390) No. 2720, Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah (3/242) No. 1997]

17. RAMADAN CONTAINS THE 'NIGHT OF POWER'

Ibn Abbas (RA) said: "The whole Qur'an was revealed to the lower heavens from the protective slate on the Night of Power, then from there to the earth in the course (of 23 years). [Mustadrak al-Haakim (2/241) No. 2877]

Allah 'tala revealed the best book in the best language (Arabic)

-by His favourite angel (Jibril) to His favourite prophet, Muhammad (saw)
-to the best ummah, (Muslims) in the most blessed month, (Ramadan) in the holiest city, Makkah

18. THE BARAKAH OF UMRAH IN RAMADAN IS EQUAL TO 1 HAJJ

“When the month of Ramadan arrives, go for ‘umrah, because `umrah in Ramadan is like accompanying me on Hajj.” [Sahîh al-Bukhârî (1764)]
