SHARH OF THE 40 HADEETH: HADEETH NUMBER 1803-11-2012 (Night Dars)
HADITH NUMBER 18
On the authority of Abu Dharr Jundub ibn Junadah, and Abu Abdur-Rahman Muadh bin Jabal (RA), that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Have taqwa (fear) of Allah wherever you may be, and follow up a bad deed with a good deed which will wipe it out, and behave well towards the people. It was related by at-Tirmidhi, who said it was a hasan (good) hadith, and in some copies it is stated to be a hasan saheeh hadith.
This hadith has three instructions
WHO IS MUADHS IBN JABAL?
He was a sahabi (he met the rasul (ﷺ) and died believing in him)
-he was an expert in halal and haram
-and he was of the Ansar
-he was described as handsome with white teeth and afro
-he was also an expert in the recitation of the Quran
Narrated By Masruq: 'Abdullah (bin Mas'ud) was mentioned before 'Abdullah bin 'Amr. The latter said, "That is a man I continue to love because I heard Allah's Apostle ﷺ saying, 'Learn the recitation of the Qur'an from (any of these) four persons: 'Abdullah bin Masud, Salim the freed slave of Abu Hudhaifa, Ubai bin Kab, and Muadh bin Jabal." I do not remember whether he mentioned Ubai first or Muadh. [Sahih Bukhari (5/27) No. 3758]
-the rasul (ﷺ) sent him to Yemen as his envoy
-to teach the people and be the judge in their disputes
-the rasul told him that he won't meet him when he returns
-he started to cry and then the rasul told him that he loves him
-he made a dua upon hearing this
Narrated By Ibn Abbas: When the Prophet ﷺ sent Muadh to Yemen, he said to him, "You are going to a nation from the people of the Scripture, so let the first thing to which you will invite them, be the Tauhid of Allah. If they learn that, tell them that Allah has enjoined on them, five prayers to be offered in one day and one night. And if they pray, tell them that Allah has enjoined on them Zakat of their properties and it is to be taken from the rich among them and given to the poor. And if they agree to that, then take from them Zakat but avoid the best property of the people." [Sahih Bukhari, Vol 9, Book 93, Hadith #469]
Mu'adh reported that the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ, took him by the hand and said, "O Mu'adh! By Allah, I love you and I advise you not to fail to say after every prayer, 'O Allah, help me to remember You and thank You and worship You well." [Abu Dawud and an-Nasa'i]
-he returned to Madina and didn't meet the rasul as prophesized
-when Mu’awiya was the ameer of Syria he wrote a letter to Umar requesting for scholars
-Umar sent Muadh to Palestine
-Ubadah Ibn Samit to Homs
-and Abu Dardaa to Damascus
While he was in Palestine, a plaque broke out and 25,000 Muslims died
-Muadh was among them with his two wives and son
The rasul (ﷺ) gave three instructions in the hadith:
WHAT IS THE DEFINITION OF TAQWA?
Taqwa is from the root word waqa’a which means to protect
-the technical meaning is, 'to place between you and the wrath of Allah (swt) a barrier by
-doing fard and abstaining from the haram'
-taqwa is translated into English as piety
-and birr is translated as righteousness
The kuffaar believe in 'when you go to Rome, do as the Romans do'
-we don't believe in that
-but we fear Allah wherever we are
-we do not follow the vices and satanic acts in the environment we go to
-the hadith states, 'fear Allah wherever you may be'
A Muslim is not like water (taking the shape of the container)
-do not follow the crowd
THE VIRTUES OF TAQWA
1. IS THE LEGACY OF ALL THE PROHETS
All the prophets of Allah on their death beds advised those present to have taqwa
And to Allāh belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. And verily, We have recommended to the people of the Scripture before you, and to you (O Muslims) that you (all) fear Allāh, and keep your duty to Him, But if you disbelieve, then unto Allāh belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth, and Allāh is Ever Rich (Free of all wants), Worthy of all praise. (An-Nisa 4:131)
-this ayah tells you that Allah (swt) instructed the Jews and Christians to have taqwa
-the same as us Muslims
The people of Nûh (Noah) belied the Messengers. (Ash-Shu'ara 26:105)
When their brother Nûh (Noah) said to them: "Will you not fear Allāh and obey Him? (Ash-Shu'ara 26:106)
-only one messenger was sent to the people to the Nuh (a.s)
-but they are guilty of rejecting all the messengers
-because they rejected him
No doubt! Verily, the Auliyā' of Allāh [i.e. those who believe in the Oneness of Allāh and fear Allāh much (abstain from all kinds of sins and evil deeds which he has forbidden), and love Allāh much (perform all kinds of good deeds which He has ordained)], no fear shall come upon them nor shall they grieve, - (Yunus 10:62)
Those who believed (in the Oneness of Allāh - Islāmic Monotheism), and used to fear Allāh much (by abstaining from evil deeds and sins and by doing righteous deeds). (Yunus 10:63)
-when you have taqwa, you have no grief
2. YOU HAVE NO GRIEF
Help you one another in Al¬Birr and At¬Taqwa (virtue, righteousness and piety); but do not help one another in sin and transgression. And fear Allāh. Verily, Allāh is Severe in punishment. (Al-Ma'idah 5:2)
3. ALLAH (SWT) INSTRUCTED US TO HELP EACH OTHER IN GAINING TAQWA
4. ALLAH GIVES YOU ILM WITH TAQWA
So be afraid of Allāh; and Allāh teaches you. And Allāh is the All-Knower of each and everything. (Al-Baqarah 2:282)
Narrated Muawiya: I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) saying, "If Allah wants to do good to a person, He makes him comprehend the religion. I am just a distributor, but the grant is from Allah. (And remember) that this nation (true Muslims) will keep on following Allah's teachings strictly and they will not be harmed by any one going on a different path till Allah's order (Day of Judgment) is established." [Al-Bukhari (71) and Muslim (1037)]
People without taqwa have dodgy aqeeda
-this means Allah doesn’t love them
-else He would have taught them the deen
Narrated By Abu Huraira: Some people asked the Prophet ﷺ: "Who is the most honorable amongst the people?" He replied, "The most honorable among them is the one who is the most Allah-fearing." They said, "O Allah's Prophet ﷺ! We do not ask about this." He said, "Then the most honorable person is Joseph, Allah's Prophet, the son of Allah's Prophet ﷺ, the son of Allah's Prophet ﷺ, the son of Allah's Khalil." They said, "We do not ask about this." He said, "Then you want to ask me about the Arabs' descent?" They said, "Yes." He said, "Those who were best in the pre-lslamic period, are the best in Islam, if they comprehend (the religious knowledge)." [Sahih Bukhari, Vol 4, Book 55, Hadith 593]
Abu Huraira (RA) reported that Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said: “Two characteristics cannot combine in a hypocrite: good character and an understanding of religion.” [Sunan Tirmidhi (5/49) No. 2684, al-Thiqat Ibn Hibban (8/227) No. 13149, al-Mu’jam al-Awsat al-Tabarani (8/75) No. 8010, al-Madkhal ila al-Sunan al-Kubra al-Bayhaqi (pg. 256) No. 357]
-many people try to study Islam in universities but they end up dropping out
5. ALLAH GIVES YOU FIRAASA AND FURQAN
Allah gives you the ability to judge between truth and falsehood
-this is furqan
-firaasa is intuition
O you who believe! If you obey and fear Allāh, He will grant you Furqān a criterion [(to judge between right and wrong), or (Makhraj, i.e. making a way for you to get out from every difficulty)], and will expiate for you your sins, and forgive you, and Allāh is the Owner of the Great Bounty. (Al-Anfal 8:29)
Anas ibn Malik (RA) said: I entered the company of Uthman ibn Affaan (RA) while I was thinking about the beauty of a woman I saw in the street. Uthman (RA) then said: One of you enter my presence and the remnants of zinaa can be seen in his eyes. I then said: Did revelation come down after the departure of the Rasool (ﷺ)? Uthman said: But this is the deep insight, foresight and intuition of the believer. [Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah, Madaarij as-Saalikeen (Vol. 2, pg. 455)]
6. YOU GAIN ALLAH'S LOVE (DIVINE LOVE)
Yes, whoever fulfils his pledge and fears Allāh much; verily, then Allāh loves those who are Al-Muttaqûn (the pious - see V.2:2). (Aali Imran 3:76)
When Allah loves you, the angels in the heaven love
-and the people on earth love you
On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (RA), who said that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "If Allah has loved a servant [of His], He calls Gabriel (on whom be peace) and says: 'I love So-and-so, therefore love him.'" He (the Prophet - ﷺ) said: "So Gabriel loves him. Then he (Gabriel) calls out in heaven, saying: 'Allah loves So-and-so, therefore love him.' And the inhabitants of heaven love him." He (the Prophet - ﷺ) said: "Then acceptance is established for him on earth. And if Allah has abhorred a servant [of His], He calls Gabriel and says: 'I abhor So-and-so, therefore abhor him.' So Gabriel abhors him. Then Gabriel calls out to the inhabitants of heaven: 'Allah abhors So-and-so, therefore abhor him.'" He (the Prophet - ﷺ) said: "So they abhor him, and abhorrence is established for him on earth." [Muslim (also by al-Bukhari, Malik, and at-Tirmidhi).]
-if He hates you, the angels and the people on earth hate you
7. ALLAH BLESSES THE LIVES OF THOSE WHO HAVE TAQWA
And if the people of the towns had believed and had the Taqwā (piety), certainly, We should have opened for them blessings from the heaven and the earth, but they belied (the Messengers). So We took them (with punishment) for what they used to earn (polytheism and crimes, etc.). (Al-A'raf 7:96)
Look at a country like Haiti
-it is the poorest country in the Caribbean
-but the capital of black magic
It was narrated from Thawban that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Nothing increases one's life span except righteousness and nothing repels the Divine decree except supplication, and a man may be deprived of provision by a sin that he commits."' [Sunan Ibn Majah (5/152) No. 4022, Musnad Ahmad (5/277) No. 22440, Mustadrak al-Haakim (1/670) No. 1814, Sahih Ibn Hibban (3/153) No. 872, al-Sunan al-Kubra al-Nasa'i (10/380) No. 11775]
-if you have taqwa, Allah opens blessings from the skies and earth for you
8. YOUR ENEMIES CAN'T HARM YOU IF YOU HAVE TAQWA
Allah made us a promise in 4:141
And never will Allāh grant to the disbelievers a way (to triumph) over the believers. (An-Nisa 4:141)
-He'll never give the Kuffaar victory over the believers
Narrated By Muawiya: I heard the Prophet ﷺ saying, "A group of people amongst my followers will remain obedient to Allah's orders and they will not be harmed by anyone who will not help them or who will oppose them, till Allah's Order (the Last Day) comes upon them while they are still on the right path." [Sahih Bukhari (4/207) No. 3641]
When Umar bin al-Khattab (RA) dispatched the army of Saad bin Abi Waqqas (RA) to the Battle of al-Qadisiyyah, he advised him: “Fear your sins more than you fear the enemy as your sins are more dangerous to you than your enemy. We Muslims are only victorious over our enemy because their sins outnumber ours, not for any other reason. If our sins were equal to those of our enemy, then they would defeat us due to their superior numbers and resources.” [NO TAKHREEJ]
9. ONLY WITH TAQWA WILL YOUR DEEDS BE ACCEPTED
"Verily, Allāh accepts only from those who are Al-Muttaqûn (the pious - see V.2:2)." (Al-Ma'idah 5:27)
In order for your deeds to be accepted two conditions have to be found:
1. It should be with pure intention (Ikhlas)
2. It has to be in accordance with the Sunnah of the rasul (ﷺ)
And whatsoever the Messenger (Muhammad ﷺ) gives you, take it, and whatsoever he forbids you, abstain (from it), and fear Allāh. Verily, Allāh is Severe in punishment. (Al-Hashr 59:7)
10. ONLY WITH TAQWA A NATION WILL SURVIVE
People wonder why the Muslims lost Spain
-this is because only the muttaqeen will survive
There is not one of you but will pass over it (Hell); this is with your Lord; a Decree which must be accomplished. (Maryam 19:71)
Then We shall save those who use to fear Allāh and were dutiful to Him. And We shall leave the Zālimûn (polytheists and wrongdoers, etc.) therein (humbled) to their knees (in Hell). (Maryam 19:72)
-Ibn Taymiyya said that a kaafir country that rules with justice will survive
-but a Muslim country with no justice won't survive
-this is because they lost the taqwa
Sheikh Ibn Taymiyyah said, “Allah supports the just state even if it is unbelieving, but He does not support the unjust state even if it believes.” [Ibn Taymiyyah, Majmu' Al-Fatawa 28/63]
11. YOUR REWARDS WILL BE INCREASED MANY TIMES, MANIFOLDS
That is the Command of Allāh, which He has sent down to you, and whosoever fears Allāh and keeps his duty to Him, He will remit his sins from him, and will enlarge his reward. (At-Talaq 65:5)
Beautified is the life of this world for those who disbelieve, and they mock at those who believe. But those who obey Allāh's Orders and keep away from what He has forbidden, will be above them on the Day of Resurrection. And Allāh gives (of His Bounty, Blessings, Favours, Honours, etc. on the Day of Resurrection) to whom He wills without limit. (Al-Baqarah 2:212)
12. THE PEOPLE OF TAQWA WILL BE ABOVE THE OTHERS ON THE DAY OF JUDGEMENT
13. THE PEOPLE OF TAQWA WILL BE IN PARADISE
Those will be rewarded with the highest place (in Paradise) because of their patience. Therein they shall be met with greetings and the word of peace and respect. (Al-Furqan 25:75)
14. ONLY THE PEOPLE OF TAQWA WILL BE FRIENDS ON JUDGEMENT DAY WHEN ALL OTHERS WILL BE ENEMIES
Friends on that Day will be foes one to another except Al-Muttaqûn (pious - see V.2:2). (Az-Zukhruf 43:67)
15. WHEN YOU HAVE TAQWA ALLAH PROVIDES YOU WITH A BREAKTHROUGH
And whosoever fears Allāh and keeps his duty to Him, He will make a way for him to get out (from every difficulty). (At-Talaq 65:2)
And He will provide him from (sources) he never could imagine. And whosoever puts his trust in Allāh, then He will suffice him. Verily, Allāh will accomplish his purpose. Indeed Allāh has set a measure for all things. (At-Talaq 65:3)
When the mujahideen were fighting the Soviet Union
-the Soviet Union airplanes were bombing them
-a South Korean airplane was shot by the Russians
-the plane was carrying many American citizens
-the American president gave the mujahideen help
-this was the BREAKTHROUGH
-no one saw that coming

The best advice a Muslim can give to another is 'fear Allah'
HOW TO ATTAIN TAQWA
1. KEEP UP YOUR SALAH
Verily, As-Salāt (the prayer) prevents from Al-Fahshā' (i.e. great sins of every kind, unlawful sexual intercourse, etc.) and Al-Munkar (i.e. disbelief, polytheism, and every kind of evil wicked deed, etc.) and the remembering (praising, etc.) of (you by) Allāh (in front of the angels) is greater indeed [than your remembering (praising, etc.) Allāh in prayers, etc.]. And Allāh knows what you do. (Al-'Ankabut 29:45)
2. DHIKRULLAH (REMEMBER ALLAH)
These people who don't make dhikr have shaytan as their companion
And whosoever turns away (blinds himself) from the remembrance of the Most Beneficent (Allāh) (i.e. this Qur'ān and worship of Allāh), We appoint for him Shaitān (Satan ¬ devil) to be a Qarīn (an intimate companion) to him. (Az-Zukhruf 43:36)
-hence they hear voices
-Allah treats you as you treat HIM
They have forgotten Allāh, so He has forgotten them. Verily, the hypocrites are the Fāsiqûn (rebellious, disobedient to Allāh). (At-Tawbah 9:67)
"But whosoever turns away from My Reminder (i.e. neither believes in this Qur'ān nor acts on its orders, etc.) verily, for him is a life of hardship, and We shall raise him up blind on the Day of Resurrection." (Ta-Ha 20:124)
3. FAST FREQUENTLY (EVERY MONDAY AND THURSDAY)
When you are fasting, all your body parts are fasting
Abu Huraira (RA) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Deeds are shown (to Allah) on Mondays and Thursdays, and I like my deeds to be shown when I am fasting.” [Sunan Tirmidhi (3/122) No. 747]
It was narrated that Aisha (RA) said: "The Prophet (ﷺ) was keen to fast on Mondays and Thursdays." [Sunan Tirmidhi (3/121) No. 745, Sunan Ibn Majah (2/627) No. 1739, Musnad Ahmad (6/106) No. 24792, al-Sunan al-Kubra al-Nasa'i (3/122) No. 2508]
Abu Huraira (RA) reported the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Allah the Exalted and Majestic said: 'Every act of the son of Adam is for him, except As-Siyam (the fasting) which is (exclusively) for Me, and I will reward him for it.' Fasting is a shield. When anyone of you is observing fast, he should neither indulge in obscene language nor should he raise his voice; and if anyone reviles him or tries to quarrel with him, he should say: 'I am fasting.' By Him in Whose Hand the soul of Muhammad is, the breath of one observing Saum is sweeter to Allah than the fragrance of musk. The one who fasts, experiences two joys: he feels pleasure when he breaks the fast. He is joyful by virtue of his fast when he meets his Rubb." [Al-Bukhari (1904) and Muslim (1151)]
4. KEEP COMPANY WITH THE RIGHTOEUS PEOPLE
Stay away from the people of hawa (evil desires)
O you who believe! Be afraid of Allāh, and be with those who are true (in words and deeds). (At-Tawbah 9:119)
-a person will regret the evil friends he had in the dunya (25:28)
"Ah! Woe to me! Would that I had never taken so-and-so as a friend! (Al-Furqan 25:28)
-do not have munafiqeen and murtads as friends
Abu Huraira (RA) reported that Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “A man is on the religion of his friend, so let each of you observe whom he be friends.” [Sunan Tirmidhi (4/589) No. 2378, Sunan Abu Dawud (4/259) No. 4833, Musnad Ahmad (2/334) No. 8398]
-the kuffaar in the UK had a report about Shaikh
-and stated that he doesn't mingle with the kuffaar
-and hates them
-why mix with them?!
-they'll just take you to the hellfire
O you who believe! Take not as (your) Bitānah (advisors, consultants, protectors, helpers, friends, etc.) those outside your religion (pagans, Jews, Christians, and hypocrites) since they will not fail to do their best to corrupt you. They desire to harm you severely. Hatred has already appeared from their mouths, but what their breasts conceal is far worse. Indeed We have made plain to you the Ayāt (proofs, evidences, verses) if you understand. (Aali Imran 3:118)
5. BECOME TALIBUL ILM
Never take your deen from a man who is self-taught
Abu Huraira (RA) reported that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, “The world, with all that it contains, is accursed except for dhikr (the remembrance of Allah) that which pleases Allah; and the religious scholars and seekers of knowledge.'' [Sunan Tirmidhi (4/561) 2322 and Sunan Ibn Majah (5/231) 4112, (Abu Eesa al-Tirmidhi said: this hadeeth is hasan ghareeb)]
6. SELF ANALYSIS
If you have a bad reputation you need to leave the area
-no one asked you to do so but you did
-you need to change yourself not run away
Nay! Man will be a witness against himself [as his body parts (skin, hands, legs, etc.) will speak about his deeds]. (Al-Qiyamah 75:14) Though he may put forth his excuses (to cover his evil deeds). (Al-Qiyamah 75:15)
Umar ibn al-Khattab said during his khutba: "Make an analysis of your own selves before you are analysed and weigh yourself worth before you are weighed." [Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah (7/96) No. 34459]
7. GO TO A MASJID TO LISTEN TO A KHUTBA THAT INCREASES YOUR EMAAN
Don't go a masjid that puts you to sleep
-Allah spoke about masjid Diraar (9:107)
And as for those who put up a mosque by way of harming and disbelief, and to disunite the believers, and as an outpost for those who warred against Allāh and His Messenger (Muhammad ﷺ) a foretime, they will indeed swear that their intention is nothing but good. Allāh bears witness that they are certainly liars. (At-Tawbah 9:107)
-don't be naive
-you need to recharge your emaan the same way you recharge your battery
8. HAVE AN ISLAMIC LIBRARY AT HOME
9. GO TO A WEEKLY STUDY CIRCLE OF A SINCERE SCHOLAR
Learn tafseer, hadith, aqeeda, fiqh
Abu Huraira (RA) reported that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, “The world, with all that it contains, is accursed except for dhikr (the remembrance of Allah) that which pleases Allah; and the religious scholars and seekers of knowledge.'' [Sunan Tirmidhi (4/561) 2322 and Sunan Ibn Majah (5/231) 4112, (Abu Eesa al-Tirmidhi said: this hadeeth is hasan ghareeb)]
Sahi Ibn Sa’d (RA) reported that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, “If in Allah’s sight the world had so much worth as the wing of a mosquito, then an infidel would never have drunk even a drop of water.” [Tirmidhi (4/560) No. 2320, Ibn e Majah (5/230) No. 4110, al-Haakim (4/341) No. 7847]
10. DO RIBAAT
Sahl bin Sa'd (RA) reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Observing Ribat (e.g., guarding the Islamic frontier for the sake of Allah) for a single day is far better than the world and all that it contains. A place in Jannah as small as the whip of your horse is far better than the world and all that it contains. An endeavour (fighting) in the Cause of Allah in the evening or in the morning is far better than the world and all that it contains." [Al-Bukhari (2892) and Muslim (1881)]
Ibn Abbas (RA) reported that he heard Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) say, ‘(There are) two eyes that the Fire will never touch, the eye that wept from fear of Allah and the eye that stood guard in the night in Allah’s path.” [Sunan Tirmidhi (4/175) No. 1639 and Shu'ab al-Eman al-Bayhaqi (3/227) No. 1639]
Watching the border post of the Muslim state
-whilst the Muslims are asleep helps in gaining taqwa
11. GO FOR JIHAD
You are in the company of the best people
-this helps cleanse all the diseases of the heart
..."The head of the matter is Islam, its pillar is the prayer and its peak is jihad."... [Sunan Tirmidhi (5/11) No. 2616, Sunan Ibn Majah (5/116) No. 3973, Musnad Ahmad (5/231) No. 22069]
Ayyub ibn Musa reported on the authority of his father who from his grandfather that Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “No father gave a better gift to his son than (teaching) good manners." [Tirmidhi 1959, Ahmed 15403]
256) No. 357]
Narrated By Abu Darda': The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "There is nothing heavier than good character put in the scale of a believer on the Day of Resurrection." [Sunan Tirmidhi (4/363) No. 2002, Sunan Abu Dawud (4/253) No. 4799, Musnad Ahmad (6/446) No. 27557]
Abu Huraira narrated the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "I was sent to perfect good character." [al-Adab al-Mufrad al-Bukhari, No. 273, Muwatta Malik (2/75) No. 1885, Musnad Ahmad (2/381) No. 8939, Mustadrak al-Haakim (2/670) No. 4221]
"And turn not your face away from men with pride, nor walk in insolence through the earth. Verily, Allāh likes not each arrogant boaster. (Luqman 31:18)
