DEATH (Note)

 DEATH

MARCH 29 2014 / 27 JUM AL AWWAL 1435 HIJRI

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and His messenger have given us many Quraninc verses and hadiths about death.

Death is from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

ONLY ALLAH CAN CAUSE DEATH

Blessed is He in Whose Hand is the dominion, and He is Able to do all things. Who has created death and life, that He may test you which of you is best in deed. And He is the All-Mighty, the Oft-Forgiving; (Al-Mulk 67:1-2)

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) created life and life has difficulties and temptations.

If you are able to cope with it, you have passed the test.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) created death with the punishment of the grave.

The sheer thought of the punishment of the grave causes some to become good in conduct.

There are 70 snakes in the grave.

When you reflect on how you will be alone in the grave and the punishment of the grave, you become good in character.

He it is Who gives life and causes death. And when He decides upon a thing He says to it only: "Be!" and it is. (Ghafir 40:66)

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) alone decides when a person passes away.

He gives life and He causes death.

You cannot delay your death nor bring it forward.

Sleep is the twin sister of death.

Not everyone is fortunate to wake up from sleep.

It is He, Who takes your souls by night (when you are asleep), and has knowledge of all that you have done by day, then he raises (wakes) you up again that a term appointed (your life period) be fulfilled, then in the end unto Him will be your return. Then He will inform you what you used to do. (Al-An'am 6:60)

Some people die in their sleep.

WE CANNOT ESCAPE DEATH

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) used the word yaqeen to describe death.

Yaqeen means something which is certain.

"What has caused you to enter Hell?" They will say: "We were not of those who used to offer their Salat (prayers). "Nor we used to feed Al-Miskin (the poor); "And we used to talk falsehood (all that which Allah hated) with vain talkers. "And we used to belie the Day of Recompense. "Until there came to us (the death) that is certain." So no intercession of intercessors will be of any use to them. (Al-Muddaththir 74:42-48)

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) refers to death as yaqeen because we can't escape it.

Everyone shall taste death. And only on the Day of Resurrection shall you be paid your wages in full. And whoever is removed away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise, he indeed is successful. The life of this world is only the enjoyment of deception (a deceiving thing). (Aali Imran 3:185)

When the angel Israfeel blows into the trumpet everyone will die including the angel.

Only Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) will remain alive.

Whatsoever is on it (the earth) will perish. And the Face of your Lord full of Majesty and Honour will abide forever. Then which of the Blessings of your Lord will you both (jinns and men) deny? (Ar-Rahman 55:26-28

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) cannot die but everyone else will die.

Even the angle who blows into the trumpet will die.

Even the Prophet Muhammad died.

Verily, you (O Muhammad) will die and verily, they (too) will die. (Az-Zumar 39:30)

The Barelvis don't accept that Muhammad is dead.

They say he is ever living.

They give the attribute al Hayy (the ever living) to Muhammad.

If they hear you say Muhammad is dead, they will call you a wahhabi and say you don't love the Prophet.

Think not of those who are killed in the Way of Allah as dead. Nay, they are alive, with their Lord, and they have provision. (Aali Imran 3:169)

The Barelvis have the audacity to use the above ayah to try to refute us.

They use this ayah to say Muhammad is alive in the grave.

When the Prophet passed away, Abu Bakr said, "those who worshipped Muhammad, Muhammad is dead and those who worship Allah, Allah is alive and cannot die".

Then he read Surah 3:144.

Muhammad () is no more than a Messenger, and indeed (many) Messengers have passed away before him. If he dies or is killed, will you then turn back on your heels (as disbelievers)? And he who turns back on his heels, not the least harm will he do to Allah, and Allah will give reward to those who are grateful.  (Aali Imran 3:144)

Narrated Aisha and Ibn `Abbas: Abu Bakr kissed the Prophet () after his death. {Shaih Bukhari: Vol. 5, Book 59, Hadith 734 & Bukhari (Book 64 Hadith 473}

Narrated Aisha and Ibn `Abbas: Abu Bakr kissed the Prophet () after his death.Shaih Bukhari: Vol. 5, Book 59, Hadith 734 & Bukhari (Book 64 Hadith 473

The ijma of the sahabas is that the Prophet is dead.

Narrated 'Aisha :Abu Bakr came riding his horse from his dwelling place in As-Sunh. He got down from it, entered the Mosque and did not speak with anybody till he came to me and went direct to the Prophet, who was covered with a marked blanket.

Abu Bakr uncovered his face. He knelt down and kissed him and then started weeping and said, "My father and my mother be sacrificed for you, O Allah's Prophet! Allah will not combine two deaths on you. You have died the death which was written for you."

Narrated Abu Salama from Ibn Abbas: Abu Bakr came out and 'Umar , was addressing the people, and Abu Bakr told him to sit down but 'Umar refused. Abu Bakr again told him to sit down but 'Umar again refused. Then Abu Bakr recited the Tashah-hud (i.e. none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and Muhammad is Allah's Apostle) and the people attended to Abu Bakr and left  Umar. Abu Bakr said, "Amma ba'du, whoever amongst you worshipped Muhammad, then Muhammad is dead, but whoever worshipped Allah, Allah is alive and will never die. Allah said: 'Muhammad is no more than an Apostle and indeed (many) Apostles have passed away before him ..(up to the) grateful.' " (3.144) (The narrator added, "By Allah, it was as if the people never knew that Allah had revealed this verse before till Abu Bakr recited it and then whoever heard it, started reciting it ") {Bakhari Volume 2, Book 23, Number 333}

The barelvis want to say that Muhammad is still alive in his grave and he has all his faculties.

There is no doubt that there is life in the grave.

By saying Muhammad is alive in the grave, you are going against the ijma of the sahabas.

The claim of the barelvis that Muhammad is alive in the grave has caused them to go against the ijma of the sahabas and they have given Allah's attribute to the Prophet.

Abu Huraira narrated that the Prophet said, "On the Day of Resurrection a group of companions will come to me, but will be driven away from the Lake-Fount, and I will say, 'O Lord (those are) my companions!' It will be said, 'You have no knowledge as to what they innovated after you left; they turned apostate as renegades (reverted from Islam)." [Sahih Bukhari (8/120) No. 6585]

If the Prophet was alive in the grave and he had all his faculties, why will the angels say to the Prophet that he doesn't know what they innovated after Muhammad had left.

The barelvis don't make a difference between the life of the grave (the barzakh) and the life of the dunya.

They claim they are the same.

The above hadith checkmates them.

You can't lose a debate in regards to aqeedah.

You should always remember the hujjah.
We will only die by the will of Allah.

And no person can ever die except by Allah's Leave and at an appointed term. And whoever desires a reward in (this) world, We shall give him of it; and whoever desires a reward in the Hereafter, We shall give him thereof. And We shall reward the grateful. (Aali Imran 3:145)

The barelvis use the tashahhud as evidence to worship the Prophet .

Narrated Ibn Mas'ud Allah's Apostle taught me the Tashah-hud as he taught me a Sura from the Quran, while my hand was between his hands. (Tashah-hud was) all the best compliments and the prayers and the good things are for Allah. Peace and Allah's Mercy and Blessings be on you, O Prophet! and on the pious slaves of Allah, I testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and I also testify that Muhammad is Allah's slave and His Apostle. (We used to recite this in the prayer) during the lifetime of the Prophet, but when he had died, we used to say, "Peace be on the Prophet." {Bukhari -Volume 8, Book 74, Number 281}

Because they say assalamu alaika ayyuhan nabi (peace be upon you o Prophet).

That tashahhud is obsolete.

Narrated Ibn Mas'ud Allah's Apostle taught me the Tashah-hud as he taught me a Sura from the Quran, while my hand was between his hands. (Tashah-hud was) all the best compliments and the prayers and the good things are for Allah. Peace and Allah's Mercy and Blessings be on you, O Prophet! Peace be on us and on the pious slaves of Allah, I testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and I also testify that Muhammad is Allah's slave and His Apostle. (We used to recite this in the prayer) during the lifetime of the Prophet, but when he had died, we used to say, "Peace be on the Prophet." {Bukhari -Volume 8, Book 74, Number 281}

The new tashahhud says as-salam alan nabi

The Barelvis think the life of the barzakh and the life of the dunya is the same.

So they fall in to grave worshipping.

CAN THE DEAD HEAR?

There is no doubt that the dead can hear.
The dead can hear the footsteps of people leaving his grave after he has been buried.

If the dead cannot hear, why do the angles ask the dead the three questions?

Narrated Anas bin Malik: Allah's Messenger () said, "When carried to his grave, a dead person is followed by three, two of which return (after his burial) and one remains with him: his relative, his property, and his deeds follow him; relatives and his property go back while his deeds remain with him." {Sahih al-Bukhari: Vol: 8 Book 81 Chapter 42 hadith 6514} {Bukhari Vol: 8 Book 76 Hadith 521}

When you pray to the dead, you are worshipping them.

Even though the dead can hear, Allah blocks them from hearing your kufr, shirk and zandaqa.
This means when you pray to them, they don't hear it.

When a individual is placed in his grave and his companions return and he even hears their footsteps, two angels come to him, make him sit and ask: “What did you use to say regarding this man (i.e. Muhammad, )? The believer will say: “I bear testimony that he is the servant and Messenger of Allah” It will be said to him:  “Look at your place in the fire of Hell, Allah has changed instead of it a place for you in Paradise” So he will see both of his places. (Sahih al-Bukhari, no.1308 & Sahih Muslim, no. 2870)

If you invoke (or call upon) them, they hear not your call, and if (in case) they were to hear, they could not grant it (your request) to you. And on the Day of Resurrection, they will disown your worshipping them. And none can inform you (O Muhammad SAW) like Him Who is the All Knower (of each and everything)[]. (Fatir 35:14)

The above-mentioned ayah is clear evidence that Allah blocks the dead from hearing your kufr, shirk and zandaqa when you pray to them.

Allah says in the above-mentioned ayah when you pray to the graves you are worshipping the graves.

Therefore we can safely conclude that barelvis are grave worshipper kaafirs outside the fold of Islam and grave worshippers they become kaafirs*

"Wheresoever you may be, death will overtake you even if you are in fortresses built up strong and high!" And if some good reaches them, they say, "This is from Allah," but if some evil befalls them, they say, "This is from you (O Muhammad SAW)."  Say: "All things are from Allah," so what is wrong with these people that they fail to understand any word?  (An-Nisa 4:78)

You can't escape the tentacles of the angel of death.
The angel of death will take your soul.

He is the Irresistible, Supreme over His slaves, and He sends guardians (angels guarding and writing all of one's good and bad deeds) over you, until when death approaches one of you, Our Messengers (angel of death and his assistants) take his soul, and they never neglect their duty. (Al-An'am 6:61)

Say: "The angel of death, who is set over you, will take your souls, then you shall be brought to your Lord." (As-Sajdah 32:11)

The angle of death will take the soul of some people peacefully like water coming out of a jug.

Some people's souls will be taken out viciously.

By those (angels) who pull out (the souls of the disbelievers and the wicked) with great violence; By those (angels) who gently take out (the souls of the believers); (An-Nazi'at 79:1-2)

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet said: "When the believer is dying, the angels of mercy come to him with white silk and sya: 'Come out content and with the pleasure of Allah upon you to the mercy of Allah, fragrance and a Lord Who is not angry; So it comes out like the best fragrance of musk.

They pass him from one to another until they bring him to the gate of heaven, where they say:; How good is this fragrance that has come to you from the Earth! Then the souls of the believers come to him and they rejoice more over him than any one of you rejoices when his absent loved one comes to him. They ask him: 'What happened to so-and-so, what happened to so-and-so?' They say: 'Let him be, for he was in the hardship of the world. When he says, 'Did he not come here?' They say: 'He was taken to the pit (of Hell).'Come out discontent, subject of Divine wrath, to the punishment of Allah, the Mighty and Sublime; So it comes out like the foulest stench of a corpse. They bring him to the gates of the Earth, where they say: 'How foul is this stench!' Then they bring him to the souls of the disbelievers." {Sunan An Nasai (1833) & (Book 21 Hadith 16) & Sunan An Nasai: Vol: 3 Book 21 Hadith: 1834}

THE ANGELS SHALL SPEAK TO SOME PEOPLE AS THEY SNATCH THEIR SOULS

And if you could see when the angels take away the souls of those who disbelieve (at death), they smite their faces and their backs, (saying) : "Taste the punishment of the blazing Fire." (Al-Anfal 8:50)

Verily! As for those whom the angels take (in death) while they are wronging themselves (as they stayed among the disbelievers even though emigration was obligatory for them), they (angels) say (to them) : "In what (condition) were you?" They reply: "We were weak and oppressed on earth." They (angels) say: "Was not the earth of Allah spacious enough for you to emigrate therein?" Such men will find their abode in Hell - What an evil destination! (An-Nisa 4:97)

And who can be more unjust than he who invents a lie against Allah, or says: "I have received inspiration," whereas he is not inspired in anything; and who says, "I will reveal the like of what Allah has revealed." And if you could but see when the Zalimun (polytheists and wrongdoers, etc.) are in the agonies of death, while the angels are stretching forth their hands (saying) : "Deliver your souls! This day you shall be recompensed with the torment of degradation because of what you used to utter against Allah other than the truth. And you used to reject His Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) with disrespect!" (Al-An'am 6:93)

The angels will speak to people who live in darul harb and didn't make hijra.

They stayed in countries like France.

France is the worst country in the world.

They force you to apostate.

Verily, those who say: "Our Lord is Allah (Alone)," and then they Istaqamu , on them the angels will descend (at the time of their death) (saying) : "Fear not, nor grieve! But receive the glad tidings of Paradise which you have been promised! (Fussilat 41:30)

The angels will give glad tidings to the believers as they take their souls gently.

SOME HADITHS OF THE PROPHET ABOUT DEATH

Death is painful if the person who dies was young and handsome.

as well as intelligent and rich.

If a mad man should die, no one will cry because he was a burden on society.

If a person who was old, poor and ugly dies, no one will cry.

If a person who is rich and handsome should die, many people will cry.

Death is more painful when the person was loved.
Four people attended the janazah of a poor man who died in Swaziland.
A week later a rich man died and about 2000 people attended the janazah.

When you are rich and generous and you die, people cry.
When Zainab bint Jash died, Madinah was is mourning.

She used to work and give a lot of her money to the poor.

Zainab bint Jash was the wife with the longest hands. She was the kindest.

When a murderer dies, people don't cry; they say happy riddance.

When a wicked scholar dies, it is a mercy for the ummah because he was taking people to the hellfire.

When a sincere scholard dies, it is a great loss for the ummah of Muhammad because he was guiding the people to the sirat al mustaqim.

If a child dies before puberty, that child is an investment to intercede for you on the Day of Judgement.

Narrated Anas bin Malik: The Prophet () said, "None of you should wish for death because of a calamity befalling him; but if he has to wish for death, he should say: "O Allah! Keep me alive as long as life is better for me, and let me die if death is better for me.' [Sahih al-Bukhari 5671 Book 75, Hadith 32]

There issue of suicide bombing needs to be addressed.

There is no need for a person to become a suicide bomber because technology has advanced.
You can use your mobile phone to set off a bomb.

Suicide bombing was for the old days when there were no mobile phones

Yusuf Qardawi passed a fatwa allowing suicide bombings.

Even Al-albani allowed it.

He said it is a martyrdom operation.
My answer to this is Allah alam.
I'm not going to take a stance.
Bin Baaz allowed suicide bombings too.

Albani said people commit suicide when they give up on life.
But people do suicide bombings to take out the enemy.

Narrated Anas bin Malik: Allah's Messenger () said, "When carried to his grave, a dead person is followed by three, two of which return (after his burial) and one remains with him: his relative, his property, and his deeds follow him; relatives and his property go back while his deeds remain with him." {Sahih al-Bukhari: Vol: 8 Book 81 Chapter 42 hadith 6514} {Bukhari Vol: 8 Book 76 Hadith 521}

Anas bin Malik narrated that the Messenger of Allah () said: "Three follow the deceased, two of them return, and one remains. He is followed by his family, his wealth, and his deeds. So his family and his wealth returns, and his deeds remain." [Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2379 Book 36, Hadith 76]

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: “The Messenger of Allah () said: ‘Frequently remember the destroyer of pleasures,’ meaning death.” [Sunan ibn Majah Vol. 1, Book 37, Hadith 4258]

You should constantly remember that which destroys all pleasures. That is death.

Narrated Anas bin Malik,: A funeral procession passed and the people praised the deceased. The Prophet () said, "It has been affirmed to him." Then another funeral procession passed and the people spoke badly of the deceased. The Prophet said, "It has been affirmed to him". 'Umar bin Al-Khattab asked (Allah's Apostle (), "What has been affirmed?" He replied, "You praised this, so Paradise has been affirmed to him; and you spoke badly of this, so Hell has been affirmed to him. You people are Allah's witnesses on earth." Sahih Bukhari Volume 2, Book 23, Number 448: & Book 23 Hadith 120

The Saudi Salafis don't know these fatwas.

They don't follow these scholars. They are like the Christians who say they follow Jesus. They don't follow Jesus; they're not even circumcised.

If the Muslim community speaks good of a person when he dies, his place in paradise is confirmed.

If the community speaks bad of them, his place in hellfire is confirmed.

Narrated Abu Sa'id al-Khudri: When the time of his death came, he called for new clothes and put on them. He then said: I heard the Messenger of Allah () say: A deceased will be raised in the clothes in which he died. {Sunan Abu Dawud (3114) & Book 21 Hadith 26}

The sun and moon are creations of Allah and they do not eclipse for the birth or death of anyone.

Narrated on the authority of Isma'il with the same chain of transmitters and in the hadith narrated by Sufyan and Waki' (the words are):"The sun eclipsed on the day when Ibrahim died, and the people said: It has eclipsed on the death of Ibrahim." {Sahih Muslim: 911 & Book 10 Hadith: 25 & Musim Book 4 Chapter 173 Hadith 1989}

Narrated Abu Mas`ud: The Prophet () said, "the sun and the moon do not eclipse because of the death or life of someone, but they are two signs amongst the Signs of Allah. So, if you see them, offer the Prayer (of eclipse). [Sahih al-Bukhari 3204 Book 59, Hadith 15]

All of you need to get married and have kids in order to have pious children to pray for you when you are inside the grave.

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah () said, "When a man dies, his deeds come to an end, except for three: A continuous charity, knowledge by which people derive benefit, pious son who prays for him." Muslim) Riyad Us Saliheen Book 7 Chapter 162 Hadith 949 [Adab al-Mufrad al-Bukhari No. 38, Muslim (3/1255) No. 1631, Abu Dawud (3/117) No. 2880, al-Nasa'i (6/251) No. 3651, Tirmidhi (3/660) No. 1376, al-Darime (1/14  No. 559, Ahmad (2/372) No. 8831]

You need to get married to women who can have kids.

If a woman cannot have kids you can have her as a second or third wife, but not as a first wife.

It is makruh to have her as a first wife.

If you go to the graveyard, you are going to see someone's grave with the same age as you.

It was narrated that ‘Aishah said: “I saw the Messenger of Allah () when he was dying, and there was a bowl of water next to him. He put his hand in the vessel and wiped his face with the water, and said: ‘O Allah, help me to bear the agonies of death.’” [Sunan ibn Majah Vol. 1, Book 6, Hadith 1623]

When Abu Sufyan died, Umm Habiba rubbed perfume on her body.

Narrated Buraidah: The Messenger of Allah () as saying: I forbade you to visit graves, but you may now visit them, for in visiting them there is a reminder (of death). [Sunan Abi Dawud 3235 Book 21, Hadith 147]

Abu Sufyan was Umm Habiba's father.
A woman is not allowed to mourn for more than 3 days for someone except her husband.

Narrated Um 'Atiyya: We were forbidden to mourn for more than three days except for a husband. [Sahih al-Bukhari 5340 Book 68, Hadith 85]

She can mourn for her husband for 4 months and 10 days.

It was narrated from Safiyyah bint Abi 'Ubaid from one of the wives of the Prophet (), and from Umm Salamah, that the Prophet () said: "It is not permissible for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to mourn for anyone who dies for more than three days except for a husband; she should mourn for him for four months and ten (days)." [Sunan an-Nasa'i 3504 Book 27, Hadith 116]

Many Muslim sisters can't accept the hadith.

Their aql doesn't accept it.

They say their son is their own flesh and blood.
Their husbands used to beat them so their akl doesn't accept the hadith.

HOW TO TELL WHEN A PERSON DIES A GOOD DEATH

SIGN # 1: HE WAS ABLE TO RECITE THE SHAHADA

Muadh Ibn Jabal (RA) narrated the Messenger of Allah (()) said: "He whose last words (in life) were 'La ilaha-ill Allah' (None has the right to be worshipped but Allah) shall enter Paradise” [Sunan Abu Dawud (2/207) No. 3116, Musnad al-Bazzar (7/77) No. 2626, Tabarani in ‘al-Mu’jam al-Kabir’ (20/112) No. 221, Mustadrak al-Hakim (1/503) No. 1299]

SIGN # 2: HE DIED ON THE BATTLEFIELD

The mujahid who dies on the battlefield has six special favours with his Lord.

Miqdam ibn Ma’dikarib (RA) reported that Allah’s Messenger (()) said, “There are with Allah six blessings for the martyr. [1] He is forgiven with the first drop of blood. [2] He is shown his abode in paradise. [3] He is preserved from the torment of the grave and is safe from the great fear on the Day of Resurrection. [4] A crown of honour ingrained with pearl is placed on his head, which is better than the world and what it contains. [5] He is married to seventy-two maidens (huris) of paradise. [6] His intercession for his seventy relatives is accepted.” [Sunan Tirmidhi (4/187-188) No. 1663, Musnad Ahmad (4/131) No. 17221, Sunan Ibn Majah (4/82) No. 2799]

SIGN # 3: HE DIED ON A SACRED JOURNEY

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri reported Allah's Messenger () as saying: There was a person before you who had killed ninety-nine persons and then made an inquiry about the learned persons of the world (who could show him the way to salvation). He was directed to a monk. He came to him and told him that he had killed ninety-nine persons and asked him whether there was any scope for his repentance to be accepted. He said: No. He killed him also and thus completed one hundred. He then asked about the learned persons of the earth and he was directed to a scholar, and he told him that he had killed one hundred persons and asked him whether there was any scope for his repentance to be accepted.

He said: No. He killed him also and thus completed one hundred. He then asked about the learned persons of the earth and he was directed to a scholar, and he told him that he had killed one hundred persons and asked him whether there was any scope for his repentance to be accepted. He said: Yes; what stands between you and the repentance? You better go to such and such land; there are people devoted to prayer and worship and you also worship along with them and do not come to the land of yours since it was an evil land (for you).

So he went away and he had hardly covered half the distance when death came to him and there was a dispute between the angels of mercy and the angels of punishment. The angels of mercy said: This man has come as a penitent and remorseful to Allah and the angels of punishment said: He has done no good at all. Then there came another angel in the form of a human being in order to decide between them. He said: You measure the land to which he has drawn near.

They measured it and found him nearer to the and where he intended to go (the land of piety), and so the angels of mercy took possession of it. Qatada said that Hasan told him that it was said to them that as death approached him, he crawled upon his chest (and managed) to slip in the land of mercy. [Sahih Muslim, Book 37, Hadith #6662]

SIGN # 4: HE DIED FROM AN EPIDEMIC

SIGN # 5: HE DIED DUE TO A STOMACH ILLNESS

SIGN # 6: A WOMAN DIED FROM CHILDBIRTH

SIGN # 7: A PERSON DIED DROWNING

SIGN # 8: A PERSON DIED IN FIRE

SIGN # 9: A PERSON DIED BECAUSE A BUILDING FELL ON TOP OF HIM

Jabir ibn 'Utaik reported that Allah's Messenger () said: "There are seven kinds of martyrs besides those killed in the cause of Allah: 1. A person who is killed in an epidemic,[Ahmad, Abu Daw'ud and Nasa'i report this hadith based on sound authority]

Jabir ibn 'Utaik reported that Allah's Messenger said: "There are seven kinds of martyrs besides those killed in the cause of Allah: 4. a person who dies of a stomach disease, [Ahmad, Abu Daw'ud and Nasa'i report this hadith based on sound authority]

Jabir ibn 'Utaik reported that Allah's Messenger () said: "There are seven kinds of martyrs besides those killed in the cause of Allah: 6. a person who dies under falling debris (in a disaster), [Ahmad, Abu Daw'ud and Nasa'i report this hadith based on sound authority]

Jabir ibn 'Utaik reported that Allah's Messenger () said: "There are seven kinds of martyrs besides those killed in the cause of Allah:1. a person who is killed in an epidemic,2. a person who is drowned,3. a person who has bed sores that cause fever and a bad cough resulting in his death, 4. a person who dies of a stomach disease,5. a person who dies in a fire,6. a person who dies under falling debris (in a disaster), and7. a woman who dies during childbirth."

[Ahmad, Abu Daw'ud and Nasa'i report this hadith based on sound authority]

SIGN # 10: A PERSON DIED DEFENDING HIS PROPERTY

It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah (RA) said: A man came to the Messenger of Allah (()) and said: O Messenger of Allah, what do you think if a man comes wanting to take my property? He said: “Do not give him your property.” He said: What if he fights me? He said: “Fight him.” He said: What if he kills me? He said: “Then you will be a martyr.” He said: What if I kill him? He said: “He will be in Hell.” [Sahih Muslim (Vol. 1, pg. 124) No. 140]

These are the 17 signs to tell you a person died a good death.

HOW TO PERFORM SALATUL JANAZAH?

Women were forbidden from going to the graveyard but the Prophet was not emphatic about it.

You can pray over a dead person inside the masjid or outside the masjid.

You are allowed to pray over a dead person after their body is in the grave.

A woman used to sweep the masjid. When she died, she was buried and the Prophet was not informed about it.

Narrated Abu Huraira: A black man or a black woman used to sweep the mosque and he or she died. The Prophet () asked about her (or him). He was told that she (or he) had died. He said, "Why did you not inform me? Show me his grave (or her grave)." So he went to her (his) grave and offered her (his) funeral prayer." [Sahih al-Bukhari 458 Book 8, Hadith 106]

The Prophet () prayed over her after she had been buried.

Umm ‘Atiyah (RAA) narrated, ‘We were forbidden to accompany funeral processions, but this prohibition was not mandatory for us.’ [Agreed upon. [Bulugh al-Maram 571 Book 3, Hadith 40]

The Malikis don't allow you to pray over people in the masjid.
The Hanbalis allow it.

The truth is with the hanbalis.

Abbad b. 'Abdullah b. Zubair reported that 'A'isha ordered the bier of Sa'd b. Abu Waqqas to be brought into the mosque so that she should pray for him. The people disapproved this (act) of hers. She said: How soon the people have forgotten that the Messenger of Allah () offered not the funeral prayer of Suhail b al-Baida' but in a mosque. [Sahih Muslim 973a Book 11, Hadith 128]

The hanbalis allow you to pray over dead people after they have been buried.
The malikis don't allow it.

The truth is with the hanbalis because the Prophet prayed over a woman after she had been buried.

The malikis say that was only for the Prophet.

The malikis are afraid people will become grave worshippers.

Salatul janazah is fard kifayah.

Salatul eid is fardul ayn.

Even women have to go to eid.

The Prophet () used to command menstruating women to come out for Eid.

WHAT IS THE CORRECT METHOD TO PRAY SALATUL JANAZAH?

If it is a man you stand by the head.

If it is a woman you stand by the waist.

You give the takbeer.

You recite audhu billahi min ash-shaytaan ir-rajeem.

Then you recite Surah Fatiha.
You make a second takbeer keeping your hands on the chest.

You don't raise your hands.

Then you recite durood shareef.

Salatul Janazah is recited with a quiet voice.
To recite it with a loud voice is bid'ah.

After the third takbeer, you make the dua for the dead.

You then make the fourth takbeer.
You give one salam to the right and no salam to the left.

Salatul janazah has variations.

Some imams will raise their hands for all four takbeers and that is permissible.
Some imams will give two salams (one to the right and one to the left) and that is also permissible.

The Hanafis exclude Surah Fatiha from their salatul janazah.
We the hanbalis differ. We say there is no salah without surah Fatiha.

DESCRIPTION OF HOW TO PERFORM SALATUL JANAAZAH - BIN BAZ

Praise be to Allaah.

The Prophet () and his companions (may Allaah be pleased with them) explained how the funeral prayer is to be done. It is done as follow

The Prophet () and his companions (may Allaah be pleased with them) explained how the funeral prayer is to be done. It is done as follows:

You say the first Takbeer (“Allaahu akbar”), then you seek refuge with Allaah from the accursed Shaytaan, then you say Bismillah ir-Rahmaan ir-Raheem and recite al-Faatihah followed by a short soorah or some aayahs.

Then you say Takbeer and send blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) as one does at the end of the prayer. Then you say a third Takbeer and make du’aa’ for the deceased. The best is to say:

“Allaahumma ighfir lihaayina wa mayitina wa shaahidina wa ghaa’ibina wa sagheerina wa kabeerina wa dhakarina wa unthaana. Allaahumma man ahyaytahu minna fa ahyihi ‘ala’l-Islam wa man tawaffaytahu minna fa tawiffahu ‘ala’l-eemaan.

O Allaah, forgive our living and our dead, those who are present among us and those who are absent, our young and our old, our males and our females. O Allaah, whoever You keep alive, keep him alive in Islam, and whoever You cause to die, cause him to die with faith. O Allaah, forgive him and have mercy on him, keep him safe and sound and forgive him, honour the place where he settles and make his entrance wide; wash him with water and snow and hail, and cleanse him of sin as a white garment is cleansed of dirt.

O Allaah, give him a house better than his house and a family better than his family. O Allaah, admit him to Paradise and protect him from the torment of the grave and the torment of Hell-fire; make his grave spacious and fill it with light. O Allaah, do not deprive us of the reward and do not cause us to go astray after this).”

All of this was narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). If you make du’aa’ with other words, this is OK, for example, you could say, “Allaahumma in kaana muhsinan fa zid fi ihsaanihi wa in kaana musee’an fa tajaawaz ‘an sayi’aatihi. Allaahumma ighfir lahu wa thabbit-hu bi’l-qawl il-thaabit (O Allaah, if he was a doer of good, then increase his good deeds, and if he was a wrongdoer, then overlook his bad deeds. O Allaah, forgive him and give him the strength to say the right thing).” Then you say a fourth Takbeer and pause for a little while, then you say one Tasleem to the right, saying “Assalaamu ‘alaykum wa rahmat-Allaah.” Kitaab Majmoo’ Fataawa wa Maqaalaat Mutanawwi’ah li Samaahat al-Shaykh ‘Abd al-‘Azeez ibn ‘Abd-Allaah ibn Baaz (may Allaah have mercy on him), vol 13, p. 141

Question: Can funeral prayer dua be in English?

ANSWER 1:

I don't have any evidence to say it can be done in English.
However, if you recite Surah Fatiha in Arabic your salah is accepted.
