DARS TWO
JULY 21 2014 - 23rd RAMADAN 1435 HIJRI
DOES ALLAH (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) ANSWER THE DUA OF THE KUFFAR?
- The ulama brought evidence that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) will answer the dua of the kuffar.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) said in the Qur'an Surah Al Ankabut verse 65
And when they embark on a ship, they invoke Allāh, making their Faith pure for Him only, but when He brings them safely to land, behold, they give a share of their worship to others. (Al-'Ankabut 29:65)
- When their ship was about to capsize they didn't call upon the idols for help.
- They called on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) alone to save them.
- They broke their word when they got back to land.
- They worshiped idols.
- This shows that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) will answer the dua of a kaafir.
- This comes with the condition that they do not worship other than Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
- They did not call upon a false deity when they were on the ship.
- The scholars say that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) answered the dua of iblees.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) said in the Qur'an Surah Al Hijr verse 36 to 37
[Iblīs (Satan)] said: "O my Lord! Give me then respite till the Day they (the dead) will be resurrected." Allah said: "Then, verily, you are of those reprieved, (Al-Hijr 15: 36-37)
SOME FAMOUS DUAS IN HISTORY
1) THEY DUA OF ADAM (AS) AND EVE WHEN HE APPROACHED THE FORBIDDEN TREE
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) said in the Qur'an Surah Al A'raf verse 23
They said: "Our Lord! We have wronged ourselves. If You forgive us not, and bestow not upon us Your Mercy, we shall certainly be of the losers."(Al-A'raf 7:23)
2) THE DUA OF NOAH (AS)
- He made the dua because Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) told him that no one else was going to believe.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) said in the Qur'an Surah Hud verse 36
And it was inspired to Nuh (Noah): "None of your people will believe except those who have believed already. So be not sad because of what they used to do. (Hud 11:36)
- Only 80 people believed.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) said in the Qur'an Surah Nuh verse 26 to 28
And Nuh (Noah) said:
"My Lord! Leave not one of the disbelievers on the earth! "If You
leave them, they will mislead Your slaves, and they will beget none but wicked
disbelievers."My Lord! Forgive me, and my parents, and him who enters my
home as a believer, and all the believing men and women. And to the Zalimun
(polytheists, wrong-doers, and disbelievers, etc.) grant You no increase but
destruction!"
(Nuh 71:26-28)
- Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) told Noah (AS) their hearts were sealed.
- Then Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) sent the flood and destroyed them.
3) THE DUA OF ABRAHAM.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) said in the Qur'an Surah Al Baqarah verse 126
And (remember) when Ibrahim (Abraham) said, "My Lord, make this city (Makkah) a place of security and provide its people with fruits, such of them as believe in Allah and the Last Day." He (Allah) answered: "As for him who disbelieves, I shall leave him in contentment for a while, then I shall compel him to the torment of the Fire, and worst indeed is that destination!" (Al-Baqarah 2:126)
- Because of the above dua of Abraham (AS) there will be no bloodshed in Makkah nor can the dajjal enter nor will the people there starve.
- Because Abraham (AS) begged Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) to bless them with prosperity and safety.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) said in the Qur'an Surah Al Ankabut verse 67
Have they not seen that We have made (Makkah) a sanctuary secure, and that men are being snatched away from all around them? Then do they believe in Bātil (falsehood - polytheism, idols and all deities other than Allāh), and deny (become ingrate for) the Graces of Allāh? (Al-'Ankabut 29:67)
Allah ((سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) said in the Qur'an Surah Al Baqarah verse 128
"Our Lord! And make us submissive unto You and of our offspring a nation submissive unto You, and show us our Manasik (all the ceremonies of pilgrimage - Hajj and 'Umrah, etc.), and accept our repentance. Truly, You are the One Who accepts repentance, the Most Merciful. (Al-Baqarah 2:128)
B) When he begged Allah ((سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) to bless the bloodline of Ishmael (AS)
- Who is *us*? Abraham and Ishmael
C) When he begged Allah (SWT) to raise up a prophet in Makkah to teach the Arabs their Deen.
Allah (SWT) said in the Qur'an Surah Al Baqarah verse 129
"Our Lord! Send amongst them a Messenger of their own (and indeed Allah answered their invocation by sending Muhammad Peace be upon him ), who shall recite unto them Your Verses and instruct them in the Book (this Qur'an) and Al-Hikmah (full knowledge of the Islamic laws and jurisprudence or wisdom or Prophethood, etc.), and sanctify them. Verily! You are the All-Mighty, the All-Wise." (Al-Baqarah 2:129)
- By sending Muhammad (ﷺ) this is Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) answering the dua of Abraham (AS)
4) THE DUA OF MUSA (AS)
- Musa (AS) had to run away from Egypt.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) said in the Qur'an Surah Al Qasas verse 24
So he watered (their flocks) for them, then he turned back to shade, and said: "My Lord! Truly, I am in need of whatever good that You bestow on me!" (Al-Qasas 28:24)
-Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) answered his dua.
- It was a very simple
dua but was answered.
- This is a dua we
should make.
- When you are in
problems, always remember the dua of Musa (AS).
- Musa (AS) was living
in the palace.
- He had to run away penniless.
- Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ answered his dua promptly and provided him
with a home, job and a wife.
- When you are suffering
all you have to do is make a dua.
- But you don't make a
dua.
- Are you better than prophet Musa (AS)?
- He made a dua when he
was in problems.
- This is another famous dua in history.
5) THE DUA OF YUNUS (AS)
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) said in the Qur'an Surah Al Anbiya verse 87
And (remember) Dhan-Nun (Jonah), when he went off in anger, and imagined that We shall not punish him (i.e. the calamites which had befallen him)! But he cried through the darkness (saying) : La ilaha illa Anta [none has the right to be worshipped but You (O Allah)], Glorified (and Exalted) are You [above all that (evil) they associate with You]. Truly, I have been of the wrong-doers." (Al-Anbiya 21:87)
- He was sent to the
people of Nineveh (Mosul) near Northern Iraq.
- He was swallowed by
the whale.
- In the belly of the
whale he continued to make the dua.
- Then Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) told the whale to spit him out on the seashore.
Abdullah Ibn Rafi', the freed slave of Umm Salamah said I heard Abu Hurayrah narrated the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “When Allah wanted to keep Yunus in the belly of the whale, He revealed to the whale. He said, “Take him inside but do not eat his flesh nor break his bones.” When the whale went down to the depth of the sea, Yunus heard a voice, he said to himself, “What is this?” Then Allah revealed to him, while he was inside the whale’s belly, that it was glorification of the sea animals. Then while in that state, Yunus also glorified Allah, which was heard by the angels. They then said, "O our Lord, we heard a very weak voice coming from unusual land.” Allah said, “That is My slave Yunus, he disobeyed me, so I detained him inside a whale in the sea.” They said, “Is he the pious slave from whom the good deeds ascended to You everyday and night?” Allah replied, “Yes”. So the angels then pleaded on his behalf, so Allah ordered the whale to throw him out on the shore.” [Tafseer al-Tabari (18/518), Tafseer Ibn Abi Hatim (10/3227) No. 18278, Musnad al-Bazzar (15/34) No. 8227 and Tafseer Ibn Katheer (5/367)]
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) said in the Qur'an Surah As Saffat verse 143-144
Had he not been of them who glorify Allah, He would have indeed remained inside its belly (the fish) till the Day of Resurrection. (As-Saffat 37:143-144)
- The above mentioned ayah
proves the power of dua.
- Had he not made the dua he would have remained in the whale until the Day of Judgement.
6) THE DUA OF THE PEOPLE OF NINEVAH
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) said in the Qur'an Surah Yunus verse 98
Was there any town (community) that believed (after seeing the punishment), and its Faith (at that moment) saved it (from the punishment)? (The answer is none,) - except the people of Yunus (Jonah); when they believed, We removed from them the torment of disgrace in the life of the (present) world, and permitted them to enjoy for a while. (Yunus 10:98)
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) asked if there had been any people in history besides the people of Nineveh who had repented when they saw Allah's wrath coming.
- They are the only
people in human history to repent.
- They did not let their pride get in the way.
7) THE DUA OF SULAIMAN
- When he understood the language of the ant.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) said in the Qur'an Surah Al Naml verse 19
So he [Sulaiman (Solomon)] smiled, amused at her speech and said: "My Lord! Inspire and bestow upon me the power and ability that I may be grateful for Your Favours which You have bestowed on me and on my parents, and that I may do righteous good deeds that will please You, and admit me by Your Mercy among Your righteous slaves." (An-Naml 27:19)
- This dua proves the
humility of Sulaiman (AS)
- He acknowledges Allah
(سُبْحَانَهُ
وَتَعَالَىٰ) favour
upon him.
- It proves he was not
ungrateful.
- He begged for Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) to let him use the favour in a good way.
- The dua proves it is
good for you to leave behind righteous children who can make dua for you while
you are in the grave.
- It is a baraka for you
to have children like this.
- It proves you should
always beg Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) to let you be in the company of the righteous.
- Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) told you the good company to keep.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) said in the Qur'an Surah An Nisa verse 69
And whoso obeys Allah and the Messenger (Muhammad SAW), then they will be in the company of those on whom Allah has bestowed His Grace, of the Prophets, the Siddiqun (those followers of the Prophets who were first and foremost to believe in them, like Abu Bakr As Siddiq), the martyrs, and the righteous. And how excellent these companions are! (An-Nisa 4:69)
- Sulaiman (AS) made dua
for his father David.
- Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) did not leave it up to chance.
- He recommended for you
what company to keep.
- He is spoon feeding you.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) said in the Qur'an Surah Al Furqan verse 28
"Ah! Woe to me! Would that I had never taken so-and-so as a friend! (Al-Furqan 25:28)
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) said in the Qur'an Surah Az Zukhruf verse 67
Friends on that Day will be foes one to another except Al-Muttaqun (pious - see V.2:2). (Az-Zukhruf 43:67)
- The Prophet (ﷺ) used to seek refuge from four things
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) said in the Qur'an Surah Al Furqan verse 77
Say (O Muhammad SAW to the disbelievers) : "My Lord pays attention to you only because of your invocation to Him. But now you have indeed denied (Him). So the torment will be yours for ever (inseparable permanent punishment)." (Al-Furqan 25:77)
On the authority of Abu Huraira (RA) the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to said: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْأَرْبَعِ، مِنْ عِلْمٍ لَا يَنْفَعُ، وَمِنْ قَلْبٍ لَا يَخْشَعُ، وَمِنْ نَفْسٍ لَا تَشْبَعُ، وَمِنْ دُعَاءٍ لَا يُسْمَعُ
"Allahumma inni a’udhu bika min al-'Arba'a min ‘ilmin la yanfa’ wa min qalbin la yakhsha’ wa min nafsin la tashba’ wa min du’a'in la yusma’" (O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from four things: from knowledge that is of no benefit, a heart which is not submissive, a soul which has an insatiable appetite, and a supplication which is not heard). [Musnad Ahmad (2/340) No. 8469, Sunan Abu Dawud (2/92) No. 1548, Sunan al-Nasa'i (8/263) No. 5467, Sunan Ibn Majah (5/11) No. 3837]
WHY OUR DUAS ARE NOT ANSWERED
1) MAYBE HE IS EATING AND DRINKING HARAAM AND HIS CLOTHES ARE HARAAM.
On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (RA) who said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, Then he (SAW) mentioned [the case] of a man who, having journeyed far, is dishevelled and dusty, and who spreads out his hands to the sky saying "O Lord! O Lord!," while his food is haram (unlawful), his drink is haram, his clothing is haram, and he has been nourished with haram, so how can [his supplication] be answered? Narrated by Muslim
2) MAYBE HIS NIYAH (INTENTION) IS WRONG.
- His intention is wrong.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) said in the Qur'an Surah Ghafir verse 14
So, call you (O Muhammad
SAW and the believers) upon (or invoke) Allah making (your) worship pure for
Him (Alone) (by worshipping none but Him and by doing religious deeds sincerely
for Allah's sake only and not to show-off and not to set up rivals with Him in
worship). However much the disbelievers (in the Oneness of Allah) may hate
(it). (Ghafir 40:14)
Umar ibn al-Khattab said, 'I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), say, "Actions only go by intentions. Everyone gets what they intend..." [Al-Bukhari (1) and Muslim (1907)]
3) MAYBE YOUR AQEEDAH IS WRONG
- Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) disgraced the Islamic Brotherhood in
Egypt because their Aqeedah is wrong.
- Many times you see people fall from grace because they have the wrong Aqeedah.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) said in the Qur'an Surah An Nisa verse 79
Whatever of good reaches you, is from Allah, but whatever of evil befalls you, and is from yourself. And We have sent you (O Muhammad SAW) as a Messenger to mankind, and Allah is Sufficient as a Witness. (An-Nisa 4:79)
4) MAYBE YOU ASKED FOR SOMETHING HARAAM
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺsaid “The du`a’ of any worshiper will continue to be responded to as long as he does not ask for a sin or breaking the ties of kinship, and as long as he is not hasty.” He was then asked what being hasty meant, and he replied, “A worshipper says ‘I have prayed and prayed, and I don’t see that it will be accepted,’ so he gives up hope of being answered and leaves du`a’.’” [insert takreej]
5) MAYBE YOU ARE NOT OF THE MUTTAQEEN
- Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) accepted the sacrifice of Abel but not of
Cain.
- Cain was not of the mu'taqeen.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) said in the Qur'an Surah Al Ma'idah verse 27
And (O Muhammad ﷺ) recite to them (the Jews) the story of the two sons of Adam [Habil (Abel) and Qabil (Cain)] in truth; when each offered a sacrifice (to Allah), it was accepted from the one but not from the other. The latter said to the former: "I will surely kill you." The former said: "Verily, Allah accepts only from those who are Al-Muttaqun (the pious - see V.2:2)." (Al-Ma'idah 5:27)
- Your dua is ibadah.
Nu’man ibn Bashir (RA) narrated the Prophet (ﷺ) said, “The supplication is itself worship.” Then he recited. And your Lord says, “Call upon Me, and I shall answer you. Surely those who are too arrogant to worship Me, they shall enter Hell, disgraced.” (40: 60) [Tirmidhi (5/456) No. 3372, Abu Dawud (2/76) No. 1479, Ibn Majah (5/5) No. 3828, Ahmad (4/271) No. 18410]
- Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) said in the above-mentioned ayah He would only accept the dua of the mu'taqeen.
Abu Huraira related that Rasulullah said: Many people who fast get nothing from their fast except hunger and thirst, and many people who pray at night get nothing from it except wakefulness (Darimi).
6) YOU HAVE NO SABR WHEN YOU MAKING DUA
- No patience and too hasty
Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "The invocation of anyone of you is granted (by Allah) if he does not show impatience (by saying, "I invoked Allah but my request has not been granted.") {Al-Bukhari: Volume: 8 Book 80 Chapter 22 Hadith: 6340; Muslim, 2735] & Bukhari: Volume: 8 Book 75 Hadith 352}
7) MAYBE YOU ARE UNKIND TO OTHERS
- You want Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) to be kind to you; but you don't want to be kind to others.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) said in the Qur'an Surah Muhammad verse 7
O you who believe! If you help (in the cause of) Allah, He will help you, and make your foothold firm. (Muhammad 47:7)
On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (RA), that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: Whoever removes a worldly grief from a believer, Allah will remove from him one of the griefs of the Day of Resurrection. And whoever alleviates the need of a needy person, Allah will alleviate his needs in this world and the Hereafter. Whoever shields [or hides the misdeeds of] a Muslim, Allah will shield him in this world and the Hereafter. And Allah will aid His slave so long as he aids his brother. And whoever follows a path to seek knowledge therein, Allah will make easy for him a path to Paradise. No people gather together in one of the Houses of Allah, reciting the Book of Allah and studying it among themselves, except that sakeenah (tranquility) descends upon them, and mercy envelops them, and the angels surround them, and Allah mentions them amongst those who are with Him. And whoever is slowed down by his actions, will not be hastened forward by his lineage. [Sahih Muslim (4/2074) No. 2699, Sunan Tirmidhi (5/195) No. 2945, Sunan Ibn Majah (1/152) No. 225, Musnad Ahmad (2/252) No. 7421]
Abu Hurayrah (RA) reported that Allahs Messenger (ﷺ) said “If anyone relieves a Muslims hardship in this world then Allah will remove from him a hardship of the hereafter. And if anyone conceals a Muslims fault then Allah will conceal (his fault) in the world and the hereafter. And Allah goes on helping the slave as long as the slave helps his brother. [Tirmidhi 1430, Muslim 2699, Abu Dawud 4946, Ahmed 7431]
On the authority of 'Abdullah bin 'Umar the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "A Muslim is a brother of another Muslim, so he should not oppress him, nor should he hand him over to an oppressor. Whoever fulfilled the needs of his brother, Allah will fulfil his needs; whoever brought his (Muslim) brother out of a discomfort, Allah will bring him out of the discomforts of the Day of Resurrection, and whoever screened a Muslim, Allah will screen him on the Day of Resurrection." [Al-Bukhari (2442) and Muslim (2580)]
8) MAYBE YOU WERE NOT HOPEFUL WHEN YOU MADE THE DUA
HADITH QUDSI 15
On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (RA), who said that the Prophet (SAW) said: "Allah the Almighty said: 'I am as My servant thinks I am. I am with him when he makes mention of Me. If he makes mention of Me to himself, I make mention of him to Myself; and if he makes mention of Me in an assembly, I make mention of him in an assembly better than it. And if he draws near to Me an arm's length, I draw near to him a fathom's length. And if he comes to Me walking, I go to him at speed." [Al-Bukhari (7405) also by Muslim (2675), at-Tirmidhi (2388) and Ibn Majah (3822)]
Abu Hurayra reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “None of you should say, ‘O Allah, forgive me if You will. O Allah, have mercy on me if You will.’ He should be firm in his asking. No one can force Him.” [Al-Bukhari (6339) and Muslim (2679)]
- If you think Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) will answer your dua he will answer it.
- If you think he will not answer it, He will not.
- You were pessimistic when you made your dua.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) said in the Qur'an Surah Yusuf 87
"O my sons! Go you and enquire about Yusuf (Joseph) and his brother, and never give up hope of Allah's Mercy. Certainly no one despairs of Allah's Mercy, except the people who disbelieve." (Yusuf 12:87)
- Your iman is wishy washy.
- You had no hope in your dua
- Your tawwakul is like warm.
9) YOU HAVE DOUBTS ABOUT YOUR DEEN.
- You doubt your faith.
- You are not sure the Quran is the speech of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
- You are not sure about Judgement Day.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) said in the Qur'an Surah Al Baqarah verse 10
In their hearts is a disease (of doubt and hypocrisy) and Allah has increased their disease. A painful torment is theirs because they used to tell lies. (Al-Baqarah 2:10)
10) YOU DID NOT ENJOIN THE RIGHT AND FORBID THE WRONG
- You kept Islam to yourself.
- You did not tell your neighbour about Islam.
- You did not tell anyone about Islam.
- If you pray for a
volcanic eruption to subside and it doesn't,
- This is the reason your town got destroyed.
- The eruption got worse.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) said in the Qur'an Surah Al Anfal verse 25
And fear the Fitnah (affliction and trial, etc.) which affects not in particular (only) those of you who do wrong (but it may afflict all the good and the bad people) and know that Allah is Severe in punishment. (Al-Anfal 8:25)
On the authority of Abu Umar who said: Allah sent two angels to destroy a township with a natural disaster, but when they got there they found a man praying in the mosque. They went back to Allah and said: 'O Allah we found a man praying in the mosque.' Allah said to the two angels: 'Go back and destroy the township with that man as well because not once did he ever frown when he saw the people indulging in haram.' [Ibnul Qayyim, al-Jawaab al-Kaafi (Vol. 1, pg. 46)]
